It snowed for 36 hours straight with sustained winds up to 60 mph. The players had a rough time. Some were delayed for hours or even a full day. Pitcher Mike Mattimore was reduced to eating snow. Over the ensuing days, players trickled into town, ready to practice and tell their stories.

In March 1888, the Phillies and Athletics were set to arrive in Philly for spring practice. However, an immense blizzard blanketed the eastern seaboard. Philadelphia was cut off from the rest of the world - trains stopped, telegraph lines down, snow blockaded people in their homes.

Sometimes, you find something cool. In the top left quadrant is Athletic Park, home to the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association from 1883-1890. In the bottom right quadrant is Recreation Park, home to the Philadelphia Phillies from 1882-1886.

The Flyers were last in the playoffs in 2020 when they were the top seed in the East.
I became a hockey fan in the late 90s, when the Flyers made the playoffs each year from 1995-2012 except one (2007). Deep playoffs runs.
We are so far removed from tgat era.

Amid the piles of snow, white foul lines sprawled out on a green sea of artifical turf. The mitts were popping, and the sound baseballs hitting bats of aluminum rang clearly through the 34 degree air.
Baseball has returned to LA Salle University for the first time since 2021.

PIONEERS: William Edward White
First in a season-long series
Who was MLB's first Black player? Not Jackie Robinson in 1947, not Moses Fleetwood Walker and his brother Weldy in 1884 β¦ but William Edward White, in 1879. He passed for white for much of his life but, uniquely among MLB players, he was born a slave. ourgame.mlblogs.com/pioneers-wil...
