NYC BLACK- AND BROWN-LED COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO HOLD VIGIL AND COMMUNITY IFTAR FRIDAY MARCH 6th TO HONOR THE MARTYRDOM OF AYATOLLAH ALI KHAMENEI AND OTHER VICTIMS OF AMERICAN IMPERIALISM: A coalition of anti-war groups and various Black, Muslim, Latino, and trans-led New York City-based youth and community organizations announce a gathering at Washington Square Park in Lower Manhattan on Friday, March 6 at 5:00 PM EST to host a vigil commemorating the martyrdom of the Ayatollah of Iran Ali Khamenei (rahmatu llähi 'alayh; May Allah have Mercy upon Him). Attendees will also pay their respects to other martyrs of American imperialism, including the countless unarmed Black men, women, and children murdered by racist police departments right here in the belly of the beast. Organizers will demonstrate the connection between Black liberation here with the life and works of the Ayatollah, and will stand unequivocally with the Islamic Republic and the masses of Iranian people who are fighting back against American attempts at regime change and resource exploitation. Make no mistake, the assassination of the Ayatollah is no humanitarian intervention on the behalf of the Iranian people this is an operation launched by President Trump with one primary goal: extracting oil, minerals, and other valuable natural resources to the benefit of the American billionaire class. Iran is a reliable friend to oppressed Black and brown people and national liberation movements globally. From George Floyd and Nelson Mandela, to Thomas Sankara and the Palestinian liberation movement, Ayatollah Khamenei and the Islamic Republic have honored our legacy and connected their struggle to the liberation struggles of Africans, Asians, and Latinos globally. It was Iran who honored the late revolutionary martyr El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) after the C.I.A. publicly executed him for fighting for Black Liberation as a Black Muslim man. And it was Ayatollah

Khamenei who vocally supported the 'Black Lives Matter' movement after the death of Eric Garner, and again after the execution of George Floyd, all while Donald Trump and other American politicians mocked their lynchings. We appeal to the 21% of the U.S. Armed Forces who are Black and of African descent in order to raise the question why— despite endless human rights abuses that the U.S. and Israel have conducted against us and against the world, why should we continue to fight, to kill, and to die in order for American billionaires to make more billions? We urge all young Black and brown people to recall how our bodies were used and mutilated in Vietnam, in Iraq, and Afghanistan. We remember because we were among the Black boys and girls who were maimed and traumatized by the American war machine. And yet, these soldiers returned home not as heroes, but as war criminals. Our communities will not forget their role in burglarizing, looting resources, and indiscriminately killing 165+ Iranian school girls with American-made bombs. We are asking community members and media to arrive promptly at 5:00 PM EST with candles, flowers, and portraits for the altar. A community iftar meal will be served at 5:53 PM and 6:08 PM, following a press conference and speeches. Optional Salat prayers will begin shortly after, at 6:30 PM.
