DM tip from a 9 year old: Knowing all the rules that the players have to follow is only important if your players are cheaters.
9yo DM: Having to remember the rules of spellcasting, smiting, and whatever monks do is not as important as knowing what your monsters can do and how they can defeat the party.

Remember GMs, if you're looking to challenge your players with complex puzzles you don't need to waste hours thinking of Machiavellian schemes. Just get a childrens puzzle book for age five. This will usually overwhelm the average player. Speaking from experience as both GM & player 😆

While I’m at it BBEGs should be competent and intimidating. They can be complex and sympathetic or just evil for the sake of evil, but if they don’t wield their power effectively and show they can achieve their goals why would the PCs even be worried about them?
Introduce your BBEGs early and often. At the start they should be nigh invincible, but every new appearance your players can learn their about them and develop their strategy. Then by the time of the final showdown the PCs are as much an enemy of the BBEG as the other way around.

The hardest part of home brewing your own RPG world isn’t outlining the key differences that make it unique and worth playing in over other established settings, it’s trying to not write a 20 book epic saga of lore and history thereby writing out all your players room and agency to be the heroes!
