It’s weird to imagine actually holding a project that I’ve been working on for most of my professional life!
It’s weird to finally have a book coming out but it’s not my fiction, it’s a nonfiction wildlife nutrition textbook I wrote and edited for. It’s very exciting but also weird that all the work I put into learning fiction writing transformed into this behemoth textbook instead.
In the same way that granivores are a subtype of herbivores, planktivores are a subtype of omnivores/faunivores. It’s all just increasingly narrow categories that makes it easier to compare and discuss in the literature!

I have been working on this book for more than a decade, and I am so beyond excited to see it come into the world!

Safety is important, but in my experience, once I got used to places that are extremely safe despite having no streetlights (e.g. Sark and certain Danish "sommerhusbyer") I stopped equating safety with streetlights - and started enjoying natural darkness ✨ 1/3

Sitting on the second floor of this big building feeling the floor shake. Odd how the very construction techniques that protect from collapse in a quake make me feel unsafe…
This is rough to see
It’s absolutely tragic how many nonprofit organizations are downright abusive to their staff. Poor management, unlivable pay, unsafe working conditions, etc often excused because the mission is important. Let’s call these what they are - people driven to serve should be supported not exploited.
lol fair enough
If you want you can report your sighting to the Coyote Project, they work to raise awareness and education about coyotes in the Portland area and also track sightings: www.portlandcoyote.com

Axolotls are the new animal of fashion, up there in the pantheon with the unicorn, the llama, the narwhal and the capybara. But even as the Mexican salamander’s popularity means they are everywhere, the species is under increasing threat in its native habitat. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I want to show solidarity for the nationwide strike Friday, so I won’t buy anything. But my job is at a small nonprofit fighting against the unnecessary animal suffering and env. harm caused by modern society. Not working seems like the wrong thing to do.
We are not the first people, or the first country, to suffer under a tyrannical government that does not respect our lives, or our rights.
There is a method for how to effectively resist, and eventually topple, such a regime. We can learn from others who came before us.
This is my favorite guide.
Photo of a monkey sitting on the branch of a a tree. IWRC's logo. Text that says Donate to IWRC's Course Scholarship Fund. This January, help wildlife rehabilitators around the world afford training to save more animals. A QR Code, a circle that says Goal $200, Break barriers. Fund Wildlife rehab training today. Scholarships cover the cost of IWRC course tuition, books, and shipping costs for rehabilitators in financial need. Reaching our $200 goal will help 4 students this spring!
#Wildliferehab is complex, & quality training improves human safety & animal welfare. We keep course prices as low as possible, often below actual costs. But even reduced fees can still be out of reach. Share & donate to help us improve accessibility worldwide! secure.givelively.org/donate/inter...
It’s hard not to be crushed by the weight of human suffering that a large percentage of my country voted for. Like, as a collective, everyone in our society is to some degree culpable for allowing it to get to this point. It infuriates me.
Might also consider switching to non-lead ammo where you can, lead can harm you as well as the environment! We get lots of hawks and eagles in on death’s door with lead poisoning from eating the lead contaminated offal or carrion from what hunters leave behind.
This is wrong. We have criminals in charge of our country and controlling our military. Heinous, bloodthirsty, despicable. We have to stop this.
A meerkat stands guard over an update from the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council and an almost full thermometer - We are less than $200 away from meeting our match! We're so close to meeting our match goal! Can you help us get to $5,000 by midnight? Your funds go directly to providing wildlife rehabilitators with the support, education, and resources they need to save animals! secure.givelively.org/donate/inter...

In an era when many species are declining because of multi-pronged, seemingly intractable problems, the solution to protecting common loons is relatively straightforward. So why are these beloved birds still dying?
