I survived the 7/7 London bombings, but as a British Muslim I still grew up being called a terrorist Four years on from the attacks on 9/11 - this was a time when, in the minds of many, Muslims were already associated with terrorism.

"While I was lucky to walk away physically unscathed, I carried a different kind of wound: being part of a community that was treated with collective blame."

@neemabegum.bsky.social on her experience as a 7/7 survivor in @uk.theconversation.com:

Right-wing MPs are more active on X/Twitter and less present on Bluesky (This is a lightly edited version of an essay written by Taya Panter, a final year undergraduate in PIRP. Taya wrote the essay for Nick Allen’s Parliamentary Studies module.)

Sharing a blog post by @rhulpir.bsky.social final year student @tayapanter.bsky.social on the % of MPs who are [active] on BlueSky v. X:

The UK failed grooming gang victims by not seeing ‘children as children’ A safeguarding expert explains why these reforms could change things.

For too long, victims of grooming gangs were dismissed, disbelieved, or blamed.

In my latest article for @uk.theconversation.com, I explore how repeated system failures led us here and what must change now

Starmer’s winter fuel allowance ‘U-turn’ sets him on a tricky path with backbenchers and voters In order to convince the public, he should probably go the whole hog.

"Starmer faces something of a paradox. In order to convince the public, he should probably go the whole hog; but doing so may well render his life at Westminster rather trickier than he would like it to be."

Young UK journalists learn towards activist roles, away from objectivity – new survey In 2015, 77% of respondents thought that ‘being a detached observer’ was ‘extremely’ or ‘very important’. In 2023, it was 69%.

Objectivity remains important for UK journalists - but less so than previously; and there is also a noticeable shift towards more activist roles.

My piece for @theconversation.com based on results from our new @reutersinstitute.bsky.social report, out today.

Incest porn? It's more common and harmful than you think.
My comment on the need to regulate this content and remove it online - as recommended in the Porn Review published today.

If we listen to how gen Z really feel about democracy they might stop telling us they prefer authoritarianism Young people want to get involved with politics – but they’re held back by a vast sense of distrust.

"Young people’s disengagement is not necessarily a sign of apathy or anti-democratic tendencies ... Feeling unsupported by their political system makes young people feel vulnerable – especially in the face of a multitude of global crises."

US election shows how podcasts are shaping politics – and what the risks are By appearing on their shows, Trump effectively secured their personal endorsement and a direct line to their loyal fanbases.
