Thrilled to share our new paper!

A simple info app improved immigrant integration in Portugal AND transmitted democratic norms to Cape Verde with political spillovers strongest in areas with lower far-right support.

With the amazing @catiabatista.bsky.social, #LaraBohnet & @gazeaud.bsky.social

Thanks to E&M for the thoughtful interview and to our incredible field team and partners in Mozambique!

Bottom line:
Mobile money does much more than speed up transactions - it can transform rural economies, strengthen resilience, and accelerate structural change and urbanization.

17.11.2025 17:30 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Welfare improved:
Despite less farming, households reported higher well-being, fewer episodes of hunger, and higher spending on essentials like education and medicines.

17.11.2025 17:29 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Agricultural activity declined:
With more urban migration opportunities, families reduced agricultural activity and investment. This shows how simple financial technologies can shift labour and reshape local economies.

17.11.2025 17:29 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Remittances went up:
The value of remittances received more than doubled for treated households β€” especially when they were hit by shocks like floods or health problems. Mobile money became a powerful tool for risk sharing.

17.11.2025 17:29 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Migration increased:
Households with access to mobile money were 14.5 percentage points more likely to have a migrant two years later. Cheaper, safer remittances make migration a more viable strategy.

Our study was the first randomized field experiment to introduce mobile money in rural areas with no prior access to formal financial services.

We followed about 100 villages over 3 years to measure how this technology reshaped rural life.
