With populated valleys, roads, hydropower and irrigation schemes lying downstream of many surgeโprone glaciers, the authors call for better satellite monitoring, targeted field campaigns, improved modelling and stronger regional preparedness.
Scientists also report emerging evidence that warming temperatures are altering surge behaviour. But the picture is complex and varies by region, and research is still at an early stage.
The review finds that floods from iceโdammed lakes are the dominant surgeโrelated hazard, accounting for roughly 74% of recorded cases. Many surgeโdammed lakes have been documented in the Karakoram.
Surges matter because they change hazard patterns. They can block rivers, create iceโdammed lakes and trigger sudden outburst floods. At least 81 surgeโtype glaciers have already produced hazardous events.
High Mountain Asia emerges as a key focus. It contains about 51% of all surgeโtype glaciers, with major clusters in the Pamir and Karakoram ranges. The Arctic and Subarctic host most of the rest.
A new global review in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment has compiled the most comprehensive inventory so far of these โsurgeโtypeโ glaciers, identifying around 3,100 worldwide.
Glaciers are often seen as slow and predictable. But some move in sudden bursts, surging downslope over short periods of time.

Register to attend BAQ 2026: cleanairasia.org/baq/register
Deadline for registration: 12 March 2026
This work is being supported by ICIMODโs Himalayan Resilience Enabling Action Programme (HI-REAP), funded by the UK Government.
#HIREAP #Air #Cleanair
They will identify the factors that determine financing and sectoral priorities, and explore how to overcome implementation barriers that countries need to address across the IGP-HF.
Find out more about the programme: cleanairasia.org/baq/2026-pro...
Along with partners like the Clean Air Fund, Climate and Clean Air Coalition, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the session will bring together government leaders and scientists.
To help ensure that national responses do not remain fragmented, ICIMOD is convening a session at the upcoming Better Air Quality (BAQ) conference, โRegionally coordinated actions on air and super pollutants through national strategies: towards health, climate and water security in the IGP-HFโ.
They are increasing our exposure to particulate pollution, accelerating glacier melt, and potentially worsening security challenges. Addressing these interconnected risks requires coordinated action that goes beyond national boundaries.
Across the Indo-Gangetic Plains and Himalayan Foothills (IGP-HF), black carbon, methane, ozone precursors and other short-lived climate pollutants are not only worsening air quality but also driving broader environmental and climate impacts.

Watch how this sustainable technology is reducing human-wildlife conflict, protecting yaks, and giving herders peace of mind, all powered by the sun.

The corrals have also eased the daily burden on women, who are primarily responsible for milking. Earlier, they had to go looking for yaks each morning, but now with the herd corralled at night, the animals stay in one place.
โ
Predation dropped from up to 25 yaks a year to nearly zero.
๐ชต Use of bamboo and wooden posts for traditional fencing and repairs reduced by up to 95% for an individual herder.
Herders highlight improved well-being, including better sleep due to reduced fear of livestock loss.
To protect their herds sustainably, ICIMODโs Rangeland team, with the Department of Forests and Park Services, Bhutan and the Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTFEC), introduced solar-powered corrals in Naro Gewog and Dagala Gewog of Bhutan.
Initial survey outcomesโฏindicate:
For generations, Bhutanโs herders have lived with the constant threat of predators like snow leopards, wild dogs, and bears. Protecting their yaks meant sleepless nights.
On this World Wildlife Day, as we celebrate the planetโs rich biodiversity, we also recognise the challenges of sustaining livelihoods in spaces that we share with wildlife.

#IYRP2026 #Pastoralist #Rangelands #Rangelandsandwetlands #SG2
This submission is open to participants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. We are looking for real life stories told in your own way.
Selected stories will be profiled at various events during the IYRP 2026.
Submission deadline: 30 April 2026
Climate change, land use change, and socio-economic factors are placing increasing pressure on pastoral livelihoods and traditional herding.
Your stories will help highlight pastoral cultures in the HKH region that capture the lived realities, cultures, and traditions of pastoral peoples.
For centuries pastoralism has been central to life in the HKH. Pastoralists sustain their livelihood through mobile herding systems that support food security, local economies, and cultural traditions, while also conserving and managing the rangeland ecosystems that they depend on.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Nepal invite you to share stories that highlight pastoral cultures in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region.
Tales of lived realities, cultures, and traditions of pastoralists.
A call for stories from the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) on Pastoralism.
Submission deadline: 30 September 2026.

The focus is on the social dimensions of compounding and cascading weather- and climate-related hazards in an interconnected multi-hazard world, exploring actionable science that links interacting extremes and risk management to societal outcomes, particularly for vulnerable regions and communities.
A new Call for Papers for the nature partner journal Natural Hazards special collection โWeather and Climate-Induced Multi-Hazard Futures: Forecast, Communication, and Preparedness for Societyโ invites interdisciplinary research that advances people-centred, inclusive early warning systems.
