I think the time is right for a story about heroic refugees navigating a xenophobic America.

Well, it wasn't much like that: it was a lot of very slow careful hammering and not pushing myself.
But it is nice when they just fall out full formed like Athena.

Like I started off writing a lot of 3500-word stories, which then expanded to 7500-word stories, which then contracted to 5000 word stories but they had a lot more STORY in them because I got better at density, and so on.
This one just got all luxurious and noir on me. There's so much rain.
I'm not sure if it's a point-in-my-career thing so much as a "getting my shoes back on after writer's block" thing.
Though one thing I have noticed is that the length I'm writing naturally tends to expand and contract in sort of a sine wave.
Just finished the first thing I have actually written since the middle of 2024.
It's a novella and I think it's pretty good.
The only problem is that it was supposed to be a short novelette.
