I knew a guy in college who got raided by the FBI for phreaking. They seized his computer and didn't find anything because ask his codes were handwritten on index cards stuffed into a Penthouse magazine inside his box spring.

We turned away from the light when we invented a way to go online without the computer screaming in warning.

In point of fact, THIS username is probably older than the O.P., since I was using it on Delphi.

At least one! But it was thirty-five years ago.

We just need somebody to stan for Wildcat and we'll have the holy trinity

You Might Be A Gamer If...

This was my college gaming group:

The hemophiliac werewolf actually happened, for Call of Cthulhu 3rd edition values of "actually".

I met my first husband on a mailing list.

I occasionally see humor posts I made to Usenet via Delphi passed around as memes. Before that I was on WWIVnet and telnetted into MUSHes.

There are still people on Al Gore's internet who remember when it got pictures.

Do not speak to us of the deep magic, witch. We were there when it was written.

You're going to hell for that earworm.

I think the time is right for a story about heroic refugees navigating a xenophobic America.

A mock Polaroid shows a family group of five humanoid aliens with large spotted heads, wearing typical American clothing from the 1980s. Also, one scruffy human crammed in at the back.

If they weren't all cowards they would bring back Alien Nation.

Well, it wasn't much like that: it was a lot of very slow careful hammering and not pushing myself.

But it is nice when they just fall out full formed like Athena.

Like I started off writing a lot of 3500-word stories, which then expanded to 7500-word stories, which then contracted to 5000 word stories but they had a lot more STORY in them because I got better at density, and so on.

This one just got all luxurious and noir on me. There's so much rain.

I'm not sure if it's a point-in-my-career thing so much as a "getting my shoes back on after writer's block" thing.

Though one thing I have noticed is that the length I'm writing naturally tends to expand and contract in sort of a sine wave.

Just finished the first thing I have actually written since the middle of 2024.

It's a novella and I think it's pretty good.

The only problem is that it was supposed to be a short novelette.

I used to be good at hitting word counts.

I had an impinged shoulder starting in 2024 for six months before I found PT that worked.

No advice but profound sympathies.

a man in a superhero costume stands next to a man laying on the ground Alt: Captain America appreciates the revelation that that is, in fact, America's ass.

THE SHIELD OF THE AMERICAS

I preferred it when this was America's Ass.
