Yep! A lot of craft that was incubated out of necessity now has to be consciously re-introduced, and a whole generation or two of incoming filmmakers just...never had to worry about exposure in the same way people that HAD to shoot on film did.
Yep, started to hit on that in another post, too. HDR monitors and pervasive over-fiddling with the color grade make everything, CG or not, look like crap. Lol, literally spent hours with @brianlevel.bsky.social yelling about this last weekend so it's just VERY top of mind for me.
Aaand the flat look everybody lands at is a consequence of the contrast-less HDR aesthetic where people are afraid of letting shadows just fall all the way to black. Has killed the richness of filmic images even when there's no CG involved.
CG guy pet peeve incoming, sorry: more to do with bad art direction & cinematography than the renderer. Maya's still the backbone of most pipelines, & few VFX shots in US films have Unreal outputting final pixels. Combo of video game AESTHETICS & nobody lighting things like film are the real issue.
