A piece is a segment of space — how far you have to go — without necessarily referencing where. It could be measured if it had to be. Yonder talks about a location that is “over there." The exact distance is vague. It might mean across the yard, or the next town, but just not the immediate vicinity.

Just had to explain how "yonder" and "a piece" are not the same unit of Southern measurement, solidifying my standing as resident Southerner in my neighborhood.
