The world feels helpless and heavy right now.
But amid the chaos there’s still light. Your resistance is light. So is your creativity. If you’re here, balancing on the rim of beauty and horror, I sure am grateful for you.
The view down into an empty blue green water glass sitting on a marble countertop. The image has been lightly altered in Photoshop to remove the logo from the bottom of the glass.
I’ve been quiet here as of late, maybe it’s overwhelm. Layered into the horrors of Iran and the unhinged behaviour down south, I am shocked and saddened by what’s going on in Sudan, and frustrated (but not surprised) by the election chaos in Uganda. And also, and also… (1/2)
Best TikTok thing going is the two dudes trying food from every country without leaving NYC. If you haven’t seen them yet, it’s incredible. My favorite so far is last week’s. Legit got me emotional.
Them: Do you have any exciting plans for the holidays?
Me: Absolutely! ☕️🎧
I found all the birds. Just in case you wondered where they were.
A side view of a stack of printer paper in a black folder. There are blurred soft-focus houseplants in the background.
I just finished the first draft of my book. It only took twelve years! Here it is in size 9 font, ready for a long date with a red pen.
Come say hello on Substack if you’d like to follow my journey from draft to (hopefully) published book.

A tan senior dog with a white face stands in the foreground on a sidewalk in a lush green park. On one side of the path is a colourful flower garden, on the other a lawn and a willow tree. There’s a street lamp ahead along the pathway and tall trees in the background.
One of my favourite days of the month is my dog’s nail trim day. It’s a perfect excuse to grab a latte from the café across the street from the pet shop, then take a leisurely stroll through nearby Beacon Hill Park. This has turned my least favourite errand into a gem of a day.
A seal with brown fur and white spots rests on a small rock just higher than the surface of the water. Its tail is lifted up, and its head is cocked to one side, as if examining the photographer.
I see you.
A tan dog with a black nose, his hair going white with age. He’s laying on a grey quilt with his head resting on outstretched front legs. His sleepy brown eyes and long snoot with black nose are pointed at the camera. His absolutely enormous satellite ears stick out sideways.
There’s an older gentleman who spends five minutes giving my dog scratches every time we pass him in the park. A couple of times a week for years.
I just walked past him and waved, sans dog, and he gave me a look of complete confusion. He has no idea who I am.
Chasing waterfalls this morning. Englishman River Falls and Little Qualicum Falls on Vancouver Island.
At least.
Just checking in to note that I’m at chapter 11.
I like how many of them have pets! Yours is very cute. Love your style.
I’m having fun looking at these #starterpacknoai drawings and collages. I just have time for a quick doodle but here’s mine.
A fake toy package with a character, me on the side. The package contains a flower cup, pieces of bread, and ipad, an apple pencil and a black shoulder bag with turnip character and two heart-shaped pins.
☘️ Thanks to @patouret.bsky.social for launching this #starterpacknoai.
If you want to ✨create art✨pick up a pen and draw. Have fun, scribble, and find joy in it, not by writing a prompt.

How’s your day going? I just spent 10 minutes waiting to hear the toast pop out of the toaster. I did not, in fact, put any bread in the toaster.
That Kristi Noem video with the detainees is so upsetting and the fact any sizable fraction, let alone a majority, of our society would endorse it is evidence of a deep rot in our entire culture. Like until you answer what fuels the appetite for that kind of thing it will only get worse
If you want to get really adventurous, try fire ants (craisins)!
Woke up yesterday to these new friends in our terrarium. They appeared overnight and dusted the pitcher plant with spores. #fungi
In 2013, I wrote a novel. I got 90% of the way through it, then paused to figure out some plot holes/motivations. That took 12 years. I’ve assigned myself to deliver a chapter a week to a friend, and just hit chapter 6. It’s not too late to dust off a project you once loved.
I have seasonal fingers I guess? Haha. They’re a half-size smaller in cold weather. Some of my rings are summer rings, others I wear mostly in winter. Not to say I never just jam them on anyway. But in terms of being comfortable and easily removed.
Cobalt blue sodalite oval set in a sterling silver ring. The stone is surrounded by a thin halo of metal with radial texture marks.
Sodalite and sterling silver.
Soon, I hope! It’s always such a relief for me when they show up.
A close up of branches bursting with pink frilly cherry blossoms
Okay. One more piece of good news.
Four pinky purple crocus flowers peek out of the lawn
At least there’s some good news today.
