Oh...looks like I may be right.. or at least, the authors are taking a similar line. π
Yes I agree. Though an extra layer of complexity is added by the fact that a lot of what SL experiments catpture is probably actually chunking.
Currently musing about whether SL is involved in brute force computation of regularities while RL is needed to extract meaning from these regularities.... but thought processes definitely still fuzzy π€·ββοΈ
And before you shout LLMs at me, they definitely don't (yet) learn in the way children learn, tho' they can tell us a lot about what info is in the input. See box 3 in www.cell.com/trends/cogni...
Currrently reading "Where learning paths meet..." in my decades long search for the actual mechanisms behind child language acquisition. Surprisingly elusive in our literature, which has (almost certainly) spent too much time focussing on what is/isn't innate. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
We have three lectureships available at York Psychology (@yorkpsychology.bsky.social) with a broad remit for research/teaching areas. Home and overseas applications are welcome. Deadline for applications is early April - enquiries welcome. Come and join us! jobs.york.ac.uk/vacancy/lect...
Yet more evidence for the inter-dependency of language and thought in humans.
Delivered a 'DLD Together' course to 25 professionals, so that they can better support families in their local areas.
A great initiative by @naplic.bsky.social & @afasic.bsky.social.

Come work with me and Micha at the beautiful MPI-PL in Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Amazing child language facilities, and an inspiring environment for language scientists
What are the meaningful differences in the way children acquire language? Submit an abstract to the Many Paths to Language Conference (due May 14th) and be a part of the conversation! www.mpi.nl/events/many-...

What if you could automatically transcribe children's speech sounds from their first babbles to full sentences?
Screening for speech delays. Comparing how kids learn to talk across languages. Following how sounds evolve month by month.
We're building toward this with BabAR𧡠(sound on π)

Throwback to 2022 and the disruptive Gender Pay Gap bot on Twitter which rocked the posturing of comms on #InternationalWomensDay.
Thank you so much to @helenhayes.bsky.social for hosting a #WorldBookDay debate in Westminster Hall yesterday!
She brilliantly outlined the benefits of reading for pleasure and how it can support bonding and attachment between a child and their caregiver. (1/4)
Interactive resources With the power of OJS and Quarto, Iβve created a few interactive websites to illustrate trickier statistical concepts when teaching. Check them out (and adapt and copy as much as you want!) With links to three different websites (accessible at the main link in the post)
Finally got around to adding fancy links to my different interactive teaching websites for showing things like p-hacking, p-value interpretations, and (still-in-draft-form) DAGs at www.andrewheiss.com/teaching/ #rstats #QuartoPub #statsky
One manuscript accepted and another submitted today already - one by a talented student and one by a wonderful collaborator. Today is a good day to celebrate the fact that science is a team effort, giving you the opportunity to work with amazing people.
ggview::canvas() is the best thing I have learned in 2025!

Happy #WorldBookDay2026. The French writer and philosopher Voltaire once said 'Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.' π
He also drank up to 50 cups of coffee a day, often mixed with chocolate.
I think we're onboard with this.
This #InternationalWomensDay, we are proud to share a spotlight on Professor @annavignoles.bsky.social, the first woman to be appointed Director of the Leverhulme Trust. In this @expeditions.bsky.social video, she shares why we need to recognise research as a collective endeavour.
Great study. But also great reporting - balanced description that acknowledges the nuances of the controversy and the limitations of the study. Fantastic eg of SciCom ππ. Favourite sentence "βWe have to give more credit to parents and babies"
Job update: Next week I start as a group leader at the Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen @mpi-nl.bsky.social π§
