Crude oil prices, showing a very sharp increase in the last day, from around 65 to 101 dollars per barrel..
Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy.
This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis.
44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.

Gullible, Cynical America
The trouble with believing anything and nothing at the same time
The data economy has made us dumber in ways that also make us vulnerable to authoritarian takover. We are have become both cynical and gullible in the sense we think we are too jaded be fooled and as a result are tricked more easily www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Every time a woman runs for president I hear that she’s too emotional and unstable to make wartime decisions, unlike the men in charge who make really reasonable decisions like bombing kids to death, starting water wars, and poisoning the entire planet

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Itä-Suomen luonnosta halutaan Venäjää vastaan vihreä muuri – laajoja suunnitelmia vireillä
Itärajan seudun luonnon ennallistamista edistetään ensimmäistä kertaa ministeriötasolla.
A Finnish government study, to be published in May, will outline a plan to “build” a “Verdant Wall” along #Finland’s Eastern border by #rewilding and restoring natural habitats, especially marshlands, as barriers to invasion. Win win win!

Btw regarding claims how new technology makes people dumb or lazy: while that may be true, I just learned that in places schools used to forbid erasers because teachers thought they’d make kids lazy.
I think humanity will usually muddle through somehow.

war ≠ tariffs
Tariffs imposed arbitrarily can be reversed arbitrarily, and removal acts similar to a stimulus. Most who adjusted economic activity can readjust.
People killed in war don't come back to life. Infrastructure destroyed in war doesn't start working again. You can't just take it back.

We are at a turning point in which "the question is whether states respond to disruption by doubling down on extraction, militarisation, and emergency centralisation - or whether they use the shock to accelerate the next life-cycle through new production systems and new forms of governance."

Hitting desalination plants is so bad. Not just evil but strategically incomprehensible. Without desalination 75% of the entire population of the Middle East will be refugees. Israel and Kuwait depend on desalination for 90% of their water and other Middle East states aren’t far behind.

People will leave you. Funds will dry up. Life will get tougher.

If water infrastructure is now considered a target it’s going to be disastrous for the people living there.

This war has to end immediately. If it turns into a water war we will be dealing with a whole different level of a humanitarian catastrophe across the region.
