SO in for this!
SO in for this!
And next week is Titanfall's 12th birthday!
This week marks 20 years since starting at Infinity Ward, marking the beginning of my game dev career - a dream I thought was never going to happen
If you're wondering, no. I still don't know wtf I'm doing
Some days I still wake up thinking, "Man, itd be cool to make video games for a living"
The data was cooked to begin with -- COD4 had a demo in 2007 and that game outsold I think everyone (except maybe if you consider Wii Sports pack-in as a sold copy?)
I found 4 perfectly good monitors of varying quality in my closet last night. Not a single power supply in sight ๐ญ
Well, I've heard enough - onto the list it goes
I'd pay to watch this.
Gotta shoutout the mad lad behind it all, stellar work @gimblll.com
The last year produced some incredible games, but the one I think I'm going to continue to go back to for years is Sektori. If you love shmups or twinstick shooters like Ikaruga or Geometry Wars I can't recommend it enough. The Steam reviews are spot on

Admittedly you'll have to put up with the occasional groan-worthy dad joke puns from me, but on the positive side we're working on something cool and are looking for more awesome devs to help us!
tldr: rad team, independent studio, new IP (we own it!), great benefits, equity/profit sharing for all
Top 5 for me amongst some killer games this year!
Oh hell yeah. I'll play thru again with HDR and photo mode!
First playthrough of Terminator 2D: No Fate completed
If this was released to arcades in 1992 it would have made all the money. Highly recommend it if you like this sort of game, just make sure to play on a higher difficulty. Was pretty easy to blaze through on the medium difficulty setting
Also loving Sektori by @gimblll.com! If you enjoy twin stick shooters and have a burning hole in your soul since Geometry Wars you should check it out. I play when no one else is home because the home theater needs to be at 11 for the music. Didnt blink during a 30m run I had last night, no notes A+
Shoutout to @bysameng.com on Skate Story. Played a few hours and its everything I was hoping for. Awesome skating gameplay, rad af graphics, killer soundtrack via Blood Cultures, and just a perfectly bizarre narrative - this is the skating game I've been waiting decades for

The core conceit of this is truer than you realize. Doing a great Game 3 can be arguably harder to do than Game 1
Agreed, its a well reasoned write up
If I have one issue it's their insistence on cost being The Reason for doing TTS VO. There are logistical reasons (aka getting actors in booths across 10 languages, in time to ship next season) that I could see using this as well
Note: we explicitly ban AI @ GW
Really looking forward to ARC Raiders launch tomorrow. First game I've preordered and been this hyped for in a long while. That server slam test was some of the most fun I've had in PvP in years - no surprise, Embark showed they already know what's up with THE FINALS
Anyone else going topside?
Picked up one of those insane-o 45" ultrawide OLED LG monitors. Wow
Suddenly my 4090 doesn't feel quite so beefy ๐ญ
30 years ago this is what I hoped video games would become. So happy games like this are being made

So, thank you to Cyan for putting that making-of videon on the Myst CD. Wouldn't be here without it โค๏ธ
None of it turned into making games, but about a decade later I finally got into games - as an IT admin. All that time learning the basics of how of how a game comes together turned out to be instrumental in being able to support the world class dev team at IW, which led to me becoming a producer.
Around this time I was also teaching myself how to build maps in Wolf3D/Doom/Duke3D. Took a few community college courses in high school on an early version of Maya, spent hundreds of hours tinkering with Photoshop from 2.0 onward, and messed with webdev along the way too
I taught myself how to "script" in HyperCard while my older brother went about making all the art and we put together a few 10-15 minute point and click adventure games on our dad's Mac Centris 610
We got our hands on Infini-D and taught ourselves modeling/animation, and I got a copy of FutureBASIC
When I was 12 I got Myst for Christmas and fell in love (was huge Sierra / Lucas Arts adventure game fan), and this making-of video on the CD was the first time I saw any kind of game development. From then on I knew what I was supposed to do
@digitalfoundry.bsky.social Do you guys use off the shelf software for your framerate/frametime overlays or is that a custom job?
Often in dev I wish I could replicate it, as running extra profiling to get the data isn't always possible
One benefit of having COVID this week is that I've had the time to clean up my email inboxes
Gotta keep things nice and tidy for the daily dump of spam to arrive, ya know?
It's just your average fifo system and they have limited capacity
New job listing posted! Totally biased, but I think we're on to something really neat here. Come help us make it a reality!
