Railing over this stuff is kinda embarrassing. Just make your music, make it yours, and if someone loves it or cries to it or falls asleep to it or sweats in a basement to it - you've won the game and I'm fucking stoked for you, truly and completely.
This isn't to call anyone stupid for wanting these things - music is a deeply personal and also weirdly competitive medium in ways I'll never fully understand which still occasionally makes me want to give it up from time to time. Sometimes I still look at those videos, too.
I just hate seeing articles and YouTube thumbnails that list out "10 things holding your mixes back" or "5 things every great songwriter does."
It homogenizes human expression into the needs of the current predatory commercial zeitgeist that is still being sold as the way to "make it" as an artist.
I hear you! I think what we forget is that we CAN control inspiration just as much as we can craft - but it hinges on what you allow yourself to get curious and excited about.
The luxury that affords me this view is that music never has or likely ever will be my job.
More specifically I'm referring to approaching music how I did when I was younger vs. how I have been for awhile now. Being directed by intuition vs. Being more calculated with what I've studied over time as a songwriter. Neither's better or worse - and they can be happily married together, really.
I used to buy into the "inspiration is a crutch" sentiment. That whole internal locus of control sorta thing.
But lately I'm digging seeing or hearing something amazing and throwing my hand up like an antenna and seeing what's there for me to catch, too.
Feels like being a kid again.
the only people who have said they can take her dogs have explicitly said they would put down the shih tzu. they wouldn’t put down the american eskimo. no one in minnesota has said they’d take her cats but i found someone who will take one of them if i take her back to pennsylvania.
Is accepting the NSLS nomination worth it? Been nominated 3 times and I keep ignoring it.
