These rooms should be filled with newborn cries, the beeping of monitors, pregnant women being cared for, patients finding relief amid a genocide.

Instead, these rooms now stand empty because MSF was forced to evacuate our last functioning health facility in Gaza.

HIV is on the rise among older Africans, but care and research overlook this group – lessons from Kenya and South Africa Ageing with HIV is now a global public health reality, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, and the response must evolve to reflect that.

Fantastic summary, great to hear this getting more airtime!

My opinion is that despite OsteoStrong's very bold claims that a once a week programme can reverse bone loss there is insufficient evidence to support that based on this study (obvs still needs peer-review).

Also see concerns about a recent OS paper published elsewhere bsky.app/profile/lora...

Menopause is associated with bone loss, particularly at the distal radius, in black South African women: Findings from the Study of Women Entering and in Endocrine Transition (SWEET) Menopause transition is associated with accelerated bone loss, though data are limited from sub-Saharan African (SSA). Our objective was to describe b…

This is in keeping with our previous observations from neighbouring South Africa and highlights the importance of prioritizing bone health in ageing populations where the burden of HIV remains high.

Belatedly sharing our follow up #pQCT paper in which we observed trabecular bone deficits of >5% in mid-life Zimbabwean women living with #HIV.

This was most pronounced at the distal radius, a common site of postmenopausal fracture.

100% agree, mine was briefly out of action due to mindless dip into a saltwater pool. The hassle of even attempting to reset some of the multiple factor authentication profiles was daunting!

Insightful preprint by Mesinovic et al. @deakinuniversity.bsky.social and @monashuniversity.bsky.social finding that #OsteoStrong does not improve #DXA bone density nor #HR-pQCT microstructure or strength in #postmenopausal women with low BMD.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence!

Pleased to be able to share our recently published systematic review in MDCP which appraised how current clinical practice guidelines approach the management of #osteoporosis for people with #Parkinson's.

Eric Topol is a particularly troubling source of health research misinformation imo because so many who should know better take him so seriously. I can accept he's well intentioned, but he's wrong too often to be harmless.

Sharing our recent work on #HIV & #osteoporosis in midlife Zimbabwean women published #JBMR.

22% of women with HIV aged 40-60 yrs had a T-Score <-2.5, & 8.8% already had a fragility fracture.

No women were taking #MHT or any osteoporosis treatment to reduce future risk: doi.org/10.1093/jbmr...

Vertebral fracture prevalence and risk factors for fracture in the Gambia, West Africa: the Gambian bone and muscle ageing study The ageing population is growing rapidly, most in Africa in some of the most resource-poor settings in the world, yet we know little about the epidemiology

Great to see our latest Gambian bone and muscle ageing study paper on vertebral #fracture prevalence in the #Gambia accepted at #JBMR 🦴 🇬🇲

#HiSciSky I'm a research fellow at Monash University interested in musculoskeletal health, particularly 🦴 imaging (DXA, pQCT, HR-pQCT). I've just moved to Australia 🦘 from the UK.

I'm interested in how our bones change across the lifecourse and the different factors that can influence it.
