University of Toronto sociolinguist Jack Chambers has died.
This is so sad to hear—he was at the university when my mum majored in linguistics, and was still teaching in my undergrad years. The whole U of T community will miss him.

John Tory was a terrible Mayor who, despite doing generational damage to the city, would have easily won another term even after he’d been caught dallying with his staff. He wasn’t “me too’d” out of a job, HE QUIT. He’s a victim of NOTHING. Toronto is the victim.
Had to think of this cool vintage graphic from 1906. I love how it displays population density in a beautifully simple way. Best practice #dataviz if you ask me. Source: buff.ly/3AA35vO

Alberta immigration trends and Danielle Smith's rhetoric: a visual timeline.
More than a year after the Hurontario LRT was scheduled to be completed in Mississauga, Ont., workers haven’t finished laying rails, building platforms or tearing up intersections for the major new transit line. Construction on the 18-kilometre, 19-stop light rail route between Port Credit and Steeles Avenue began in 2020 and was originally supposed to be completed in 2024. But the Hurontario LRT missed its completion date, with both Metrolinx and the Ford government no longer providing a target opening timeline.
Across the whole guideway for the 18-kilometre transit line, just 45 per cent of the track has actually been laid, according to the provincial transit agency. Nineteen of the route’s 55 intersections also still need to have rail work finished.
As a comparison, works for Bologna's first tram line (15 km) started in April 2023 and tracklaying is expected to be substantially finished by June 2026.
Works for the second line (5.5 km) started in September 2024 with the same target.

Harbord yesterday. Anyone with a mobility device will have difficulty & now-plowed bike lanes unusable. Tory-council contract but somebody is making cash w/out doing the job right. It’s confounding that the mayor isn’t yelling about this. Instead we get city ads/PR that snow clearing is good.
So 2 weeks later the City's contractors finally got around to plowing the Sherbourne #bikeTO lanes but the are still completely unrideable for their entire length because they did a hack job of it leaving an intermittent layer of snow and ice.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

One streetcar has the capacity of three buses.
Three buses come 3x more often than one streetcar.
Next up: Why do three buses worth of people on a streetcar need to wait for one car making a left-hand turn?
Dug up film cartridges and got my Super 8 to work again last week. Big learning curve, but fun to continue creating some home and city small gauge, that's not from a smart phone.
Abject, despicable cruelty from three politicians.
