Happy New Year Nuzhat π
It was absolutely amazing and to top it all a trailing Brocken Spectre as we climbed Dubhcraig π€©
Nice if you can get it. University staff got 1.4% this year after 15 years of below inflation rises (excepting VCs of course, who have also done nicely)
It was fabulous

Lovely light on Dumyat this evening
News Presidential visit Magas next project is to fix 'broken Britain'
Musk is one of those pushing for regime change. There were plenty of points where British and US politics have been out of sync and it was fine - Blair and Bush. But in the Maga movement, there is something else: Maga wants to export Maga. In Nigel Farage, it has someone who positions himself as "first friend"
What follows the pageantry, then, is a test of nerve. Washington's Anglophiles are not content to cheer Britain from the stands; they want to rewrite its rulebook and cast Westminster as the next front in their domestic struggle. The test for Sir Keir Starmer is whether he can welcome the friendship without importing the fight.
Quite incredible this is even being discussed.
Quoting Charlie Kirk and Muskβs plans for us. And traitorous Farage as their way in.
All those moronic Brexiters calling for βcontrolβ and βsovereigntyβ, now happy to be kicked around by American fascists.
Itβs horrific and it must not happen.

This distressing situation is a terrible indictment of 14 years of Tory misgovernment, but the neglect goes back decades. The UK - the βsick man of Europeβ and the result of deliberate policy decisions

My students this term have been *passionate* in their rejection of generative AI. I think the wildfires have something to do with it β the environmental impact of data centers, the scarcity of water, the terrible losses theyβre seeing. . . it makes the βabstractβ of the climate crisis very real.
