What success will look like. The litmus test for success will not be measured in specific accommodations - important though these may be - but by whether neurodivergent children fundamentally feel that they belong and are wanted in school, and that they are supported to achieve, attain and prepare for adulthood.
Alongside the White Paper, the government has also released the Neurodivergence Task and Finish Group Report.
'Mainstream settings should become more inclusive as standard. To achieve this...we need both a cultural and systems shift.'

Graphic provides 4 quotes from the conclusions to my 2020 research into why autistic girls stop attending mainstream secondary schools.
1. 'In contrast to much of the literature on school non-attendance, the autistic girls in this study wanted to be in a school, learning.'
2. 'Disengagement was a gradual process for most.'
3. 'This research shows the multiple, often subtle ways in which autistic girls can be excluded from mainstream education, sometimes unnoticed.'
4. The girls were not rejecting education, but an ethos and an environment that was profoundly damaging to their mental health.'
This resonated deeply with me and my 2020 participatory research into why a growing number of autistic girls start - and then stop - attending mainstream secondary schools. Quotes from the conclusions of this research are shared by Jo and Natalie in the graphic below.
