So many of these articles about people being kidnapped from their communities are written as though they're about people caring about each other equally, and when you read them critically they're actually about exploitable labor. Or about

"the current mayor, Steve Rhodes, adding that race was not something people worried about in Wilder. “I don’t know anyone in town that sees a race,” he said."

Later in the article, the current mayor of the town says he doesn't know anyone in town who "sees a race" (the indefinite article there is confusing, especially since the raid took place at a racecourse). But people see cheap labor and they've been taught to associate it with race/nationality.

"“We rely on Hispanic labor,” said Chris Gross, a second-generation farmer who grows sweet corn seed and mint in Wilder. She added, “Nobody thought something like this could happen here.”"

I've posted about this before but I just looked up this article for something I'm working on and I cannot deal with this - the quote, or the way it's presented without direct follow-up or context.
What does "Hispanic labor" mean?

The work is not "Hispanic". The "Hispanic"ness of the laborers is not relevant to how they do the work, or why the "we" in this quote - the non-Hispanic residents of the town, presumably - depend on them.

What it means is cheap labor. It means people made precarious so they can't ask for more.
