As the facilitators put it, βWatching that young person beam with pride afterwards and watching the group come together to celebrate them was one of the most moving moments of the entire week. It reminded us that confidence is built through a community that uplifts and believes in you.β
One participant nearly didnβt present, but after gathering the courage to share, they were met with an eruption of cheers from the entire forum.
Over this time, the youth found different tools to process their feelings and experiences. As it turns out, the most powerful tools of all were their own voices. On the final day, the floor was given over to the youth to host their own storytelling session.
Hosted by Northern Youth Leadership and partner organizations from across the North, the facilitators created a collaborative atmosphere of joy and trust. Laughter was a constant at the camp as they delivered thirty different sessions with storytelling and creative expression at the heart of it all.
Last year, the Maureen Tonge βLiving Your Legacyβ Fund issued a grant to Connecting on the Land in Denendeh: a mental health initiative giving Indigenous youth a culturally-grounded space to grieve, heal, and develop resilience in the face of climate change and its effects on the land.

In 2017, Parsons created the GMRP scholarship to support Indigenous students pursuing fields related to the remediation of contaminated sites, including business administration, environmental sciences, and skilled trades.
As the Main Construction Manager of the Giant Mine Remediation Project, Parsons Inc. is committed to supporting socio-economic development for Indigenous peoples in the Area of Contract by implementing a range of strategies aimed at building capacity within local communities.
These outstanding students were selected for their educational goals, achievements, skills, personal qualities, and their envisioned role in ongoing remediation efforts. They have been awarded $3,000 each to pursue their studies.
We are thrilled to announce the 2025 recipients of the Giant Mine Remediation Project (GMRP) Scholarship, administered in partnership with Parsons Inc.
