I learned all this and much more in a free workshop hosted by @beta.nyc on Monday. Fortunately, they're hosting ANOTHER workshop on Friday! If you want to learn the nuts and bolts of what it means for governments to be transparent and make data-drive decisions this is a great place to start!
It turns out this is just another step in a long long history of NYC's efforts to make governing transparent. For over 150 years they've published a daily newspaper called The City Record that gives a detailed view of what the city's many departments are doing.
NYC has a very impressive Open Data portal. Every single day, a new dataset of all the 311 calls are made available for anyone to to dig in and analyze. This is just one of hundreds of datasets available from the city. 🧵
