How is this not just the problem of veracity?
People post views that aren't true, people with no media literacy (or, if we're honest, limited plain literacy) buy the story that supports their (ignorant, undereducated) view and propagate it.
The only difference is that now, it's robots doing that.

The trope: "Go here and kill this named guy" is weaksauce bad storytelling for an MMO.
So, there's one baddie, that can be defeated by one player, or even a small group - why is it a problem?
There are hundreds of heroes around, your enemies have to be bigger than that
In today's #Gamedev tea break - I observe that there sure are a lot of people out there like:
"Gosh I really wish the things that I loved to do took up less of my time."
Presented right that could be super fun!

Video game UI is a helper, it exists to reinforce design, and worst-case to fill in where the design has failed to convey the intended gameplay.
If you find yourself playing the UI instead of the game - there's been a disconnect between the design and the player experience you built.

In my recent jaunt down this very hole I found that most charge a sub, and if they don't, they require you to host the shop - or pay a sub.
The best I think I found still requires me to set up my own shop pages, to include calcing my own shipping rates? - and that's why it's going so sloooowly.
A colleague just floated the idea of a Gamma World adjacent #MMORPG world - and I gotta admit, underserved niche - could be rad.
Rather than fight that, the narratalogical paradigm of good MMO content takes into account the reality of the context, rather than trying to obviate it with instances and client-side bullshit.
Reality is not subjective, doubly-so curated realities in boxes.

The entire history of MMO content creation challenges orbit various concessions made to the multiplayer environment - single-player experiences are necessarily inferior in this context. It's built-in.

Basically every choice made in the past 20+ years in MMO dev that has "addressed" player friction by moving the content toward a single-player paradigm has been a trash hack, harmful to the genre.

I think that there is something to learn about humanity that is woven into the threads of anachronisms you wrap your brain around when settling into the worlds that "old scifi" describes - it's sci-fi after all, like fantasy, it inhabits an imagined world that is different from the one you live in.
The one, single, bit of commentary that I've received on my assertion that "time respect" criticisms of #gaming are fundamentally disrespectful to gaming as a core hobby was "Based."

MMORPGs that people miss and have nostalgia for were places you hung out in *first* and a place to achieve goals over others *second* - and hobbyists didn't think of being logged into those spaces without making linear prog as "wasted time"
