I am basically here to procrastinate while finishing my Ph.D. thesis... I am studying the Arctic Ocean, Carbon Budgets, Sea Ice Biogeochemistry, and Ocean Acidification. Grateful to live in π¨π¦, originally from π©πͺ. [She/her]
One step closer to wrapping up my #PhD: I am looking forward to present my ongoing research at our department's seminar.

First the #US election debacle, then the implosion of the #german parliament, now this. As if this week hasn't been frustrating enough... I hope democracy in the #EU stays strong.

"The EEA said total net greenhouse gas emissions for 2023 decreased to 37% below 1990 levels, according to its preliminary figures." A much-needed source of some optimism with everything else going on right now. www.dw.com/en/eu-greenh...
For posts like this I would like to be able to react with π instead of a "like/heart".
This is terrible. I am sorry you must deal with this, and I respect you for staying strong and vocal. You are doing important work! I would not have the stamina, that's why I am mostly staying silent on these websites. Bluesky is the first network that feels a bit safer.
Yes, the global ocean might still have plenty of CO2-undersaturated waters. But do we want to live with the consequences, widespread ocean acidification? Also some coastal ocean ecosystems are already emitting CO2 regularly.
I recommend obsidian. It's all in markdown, so super portable. The program itself is quite powerful with zotero integration, embedded images, canvases for mind-maps, and you can tag&search your notes easily. And open source π
Stoked to learn that this game that I am looking forward to playing has finally launched. Humour makes things more endurable, I have heard. Can wait for it to ship, @maxhuibai.bsky.social π kck.st/3ZmZ4Lv

Good News! Canada is taking steps in the right direction and is increasing funding for grad students and postdocs.
It might be a bit late to affect my PhD, but at least the prospect of staying in Canada for a postdoc feels less like financial self-harm.
SOS, thank you for fighting this fight :)
I feel you. It's going to get better, one step at a time, I have heard. And I have also heard, learning to say "no" is valuable...

It might not be the best shot of the event, but I am still happy and proud my phone got it. What a magnificent moment.
Graduate student and postdoctoral researcher champion Maxime Blanchette-Joncas explained how developing, retaining and attracting research talent should be a top priority for Canada.

Yes, please! I am so sick of ppl saying "all conferences must be remote" even if that negatively impacts early career scientists, when there are other ways to reduce a conferences Carbon footprint.
Join me in advocating for increased funding for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in Budget 2024 #SupportOurScience #Canada π¨π¦
Well, you, being an institute, could change that by hiring more female researchers in better positions, and make sure there's equal pay for equal positions, if I may respond spontaneously.
Yes, it is extra rewarding. Sourcing the battery was also easy, i feel very fortunate about that :)
lol I thought I was alone yearning for that time just before, because thats when you finally get to clean up and sort all your files in piece& quiet.
components of a laptop, the battery is removed from the motherboard.
being able to open some screws, take out the dead battery, put in a new one and basically have a new computer in 10 minutes is one of the best feelings in the world.
I wish every device was as easy to repair as this.

This is amazing π€© thank you for sharing.
#HiSciSky I am sharing this petition for increasing stipends for π¨π¦Grad students and Postdocs. Please help to distribute it among peers (residents and citizens of Canada) and sign. www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en... Deadline is 27th Nov!
Thanks

At least we agree on the last point, all these removal methods are useless if we don't stop emitting.
Dear #AcWriMo community, thank you for peer pressuring me, inspiring me and motivating me to finally finish my manuscript :)
Onwards with the next.

Especially iron fertilization can yield unpredictable toxic algal blooms which can reduce fish stocks, even in neighboring countries. I do not know any one of my colleagues who would say, "we did enough research on this". I really would love this to be a solution, but the risks outweigh the reward.
