ICE poses threat to our public health. Here's why | Opinion
Research shows that when ICE ramps up enforcement in a community, the people living there experience heightened physiological and psychological stress, the author says.
Here, I write about the public health threat posed by ICE.
Renee Good, Alex Pretti, & the dozens of others killed by ICE in recent months make this clear. But ICE also kills more slowly & covertly, by inducing chronic stress, fear, & threat.
Abolish ICE.

Abolishing ICE isnβt enough β itβs time to center peopleβs humanity | Heba Gowayed and Victor Ray
Itβs far from radical to reject a system predicated on violence β despite what thinktanks might claim
In the first of what's likely to be many collaborations with @hebagowayed.bsky.social (and my @us.theguardian.com debut) we argue that abolishing ICE would be a good start.

Foster Care and Child Maltreatment Mortality Rates in the US
This cross-sectional study of children in state-supervised foster care assesses deaths due to child maltreatment and whether these fatalities are associated with foster care entry rates.
foster care has been on the decline nationally over the past ten years. that's a good thing! but there's a group that routinely argue that this is putting kids in danger. @kelleyfong.bsky.social; @bobapel.bsky.social and I checked the evidence (it's null 1/n) jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

How Did DOGE Disrupt So Much While Saving So Little?
On DOGEβs watch, federal spending did not go down at all. It went up. But is still led to cuts that closed offices, canceled programs and deprived people of food, medicine and other aid.

It means the world that they come to me, & share w me. Truly. I see it as one of my most cherished roles.
And still, I think about this care work that so many of us do, that is so often invisible & unspoken, so disproportionately distributed, but also so incredibly heavy & important.

It struck me this week that I probably have more students cry in my office in a semester than some faculty have over the course of their entire careers. Not crying about my courses (phew) but bc they are having a hard time, bc the moment feels like too much, &/or bc they just want to be heard.
