I’m super excited for this event and looking forward to catching up with Tampere friends too! We think the critical play reference group model is a great way to engage with local communities and players 💕
My first academic publication came out today in Education Sciences!
Our paper presents a card game I designed as an example of how bespoke boardgames can provide an authentic learning experience.
Huge thanks to lead and co-authors @melissainau.bsky.social and @elisabone.bsky.social.
I’m so glad this is finally out in the world! Students consistently ask where they can buy their own copy is the game 💕
Once again, I have been asked to give a conference talk about AI. Once again, I ask how much I am allowed to swear on stage.
Delayed going out to lunch so my daughter could show off her (extensive) eyeball collection. This is less creepy than it sounds but only a smidge.
We share via our website but can also create a list of people to email.
That’s what the interviews are for, if you’re interested to join in.
We’re interested in the many stories rather than some imagined average - so thank you for responding.
In our work, we tend to embrace the mess, chaos and specificity (when needed).
Also - first response should say are OR ARE NOT using tech … — I’m interested in allll the tools at the boardgame teacher’s disposal.
I’m interested in hobbyist gamers who teach games but also in someone who has taught their grandchildren to play snap or Uno, or who bought their kids a game at Kmart and now needs to get them up to speed.
Hope this helps! Happy to chat.
My research is about the intersection of boardgames & technology, so I have a specific interest in thinking about how people are using tech to learn and teach games (no spoilers here, it’s obvious from the questions). But the survey will also give broader insights into how people teach games.
Fantastic! Thank you so much for participating.
There’s an optional question to participate in further research activities (interviews, focus groups). Or you can email us at hybrid-games@unimelb.edu.au to reach out directly.
Fantastic, Andrew! Did you sign up for the interview sessions? Otherwise feel free to email us at hybrid-games@unimelb.edu.au if you'd like to chat more.
Thanks! It’s up to you - I think it’s great to have that range of game types represented but you’re welcome to respond with a published game as well.
The last game I “taught” was explaining Flip 7 on the radio - FWIW, I wouldn’t include that in the study.
Thank you!
lol if that was biased all research (academic and industry) would be completely broken.
Image text reads: Do you teach board games? We invite you to complete a short survey for academic research into people’s experiences of teaching boardgames, at home and elsewhere. The survey takes about ten minutes to complete. To find out more, please use the QR code, visit go.unimelb.edu.au/45qp or email hybrid-games@unimelb.edu.au (University of Melbourne Human Research Ethics Approval 33778) There is also a decorative image of game pawns and dice, with a magnifying glass on top, as well as a QR code which points to the given link.
Do you teach boardgames? We have just launched a survey asking about your experience! It takes about ten minutes to complete - please share!

Philomena Cunk against a collection of classical statues. "Antigone's death is even more tragic than it actually is, which makes her a tragic hero"
Philomena Cunk looking thoughtful. "Goya continued to paint tapestries until 1792 when serious illness left him dead for life"
Philomena Cunk looking thoughtfully into the distance. "Society is slowly becoming more contemporary now"
Philomena Cunk looking into camera on a beach. "Diderot's Tahiti represents a typical male fantasy in which attractive young women are eager to engage in sexual activity with the French"
@gralefrit.bsky.social You have to see these! A friend of mine has been collating a series of images entitled "Things my students have written turned into Philomena Cunk quotes" and they're just glorious.
It is my 10 year BGStats-iversary! Thanks to the Bigster who indulged me in a game of Qwixx to celebrate 😍 #bgstats #qwixx
It’s a photo of my dining room, stuff everywhere, big wall of games on the wall.

Could this study BE any more adorable? When findings are what you want them to be.
