We tried a new format focused on collaboration, curiosity, and community, and it worked!
What an incredible week at #QuakeHack:
A statistical seismology hackathon for early-career researchers in the Swiss mountains. 19 people from around the world, four teams, four self-defined projects.
We spent the week learning from each other, exploring new ideas, and figuring things out together.
oh, and I didn't know about the game! Well, most importantly, when is the next big one coming, and various smaller questions trying to get us a little closer there. How do earthquakes interact? Are there precursory signals that tell us when a big one is more likely than usual, etc.

Together with Aron, Marta, and @vaniller.bsky.social, I can't wait to welcome a fantastic group of early-career scientists to Castasegna to tackle unsolved problems in statistical seismology. We were lucky to select incredibly enthusiastic and diverse participants!

In it, she describes the development and testing of a harmonized #earthquake #forecasting model for Europe. Not an easy thing to do. You should check out the paper!

Marked Hawkes processes, usually with a stationary background component and then the magnitude-dependent clustering component on top. And we call them ETAS (apidemic-type aftershock sequence) models :)
Well, we mostly model the clustering of earthquakes in space and time. That means that when there is activity somewhere, the chances of more activity are temporally increased compared to normal. We try to better understand the specific clustering behavior of certain regions and individual sequences.

With so many new people, time for a new intro: I came from pure maths to statistical seismology 5 years ago, and I love it! ๐คฉ whenever volcano friends need help in the field, you'll find me happily hiking unbelievable landscapes. But usually, I'll be behind my computer, just as excited (almost)
