๐Ÿšจ QuakeHack 2025 was a blast!

Huge congrats to the winning team wave2wave ๐ŸŒŠ who tackled earthquake research straight from the waveforms. ๐Ÿง

They were thrilled to take home a Raspberry Shake!

๐Ÿ“ฆ Itโ€™s en route to Santa Cruz โ€“ more action shots soon! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Huge thanks to @raspishake.bsky.social for donating a device for the winning team โ€” and to SED @ @ethz.ch, Fondazione Garbald, #IUGG & @seismosocam.bsky.social for making it all possible.
We tried a new format focused on collaboration, curiosity, and community, and it worked!

What an incredible week at #QuakeHack:
A statistical seismology hackathon for early-career researchers in the Swiss mountains. 19 people from around the world, four teams, four self-defined projects.
We spent the week learning from each other, exploring new ideas, and figuring things out together.

oh, and I didn't know about the game! Well, most importantly, when is the next big one coming, and various smaller questions trying to get us a little closer there. How do earthquakes interact? Are there precursory signals that tell us when a big one is more likely than usual, etc.

Thanks to our sponsors โ€” the #SwissSeismologicalService at @ethzurich.bsky.social, #IUGG, the @seismosocam.bsky.social, and the Fondazione Garbald โ€” for making this possible. Let the hacking begin! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ป

#QuakeHack starts this Sunday! ๐Ÿ’ซ
Together with Aron, Marta, and @vaniller.bsky.social, I can't wait to welcome a fantastic group of early-career scientists to Castasegna to tackle unsolved problems in statistical seismology. We were lucky to select incredibly enthusiastic and diverse participants!

In it, she describes the development and testing of a harmonized #earthquake #forecasting model for Europe. Not an easy thing to do. You should check out the paper!

The main DEI page from @agu.org has been modified to take diversity out of the title. Glad to see it's not deleted entirely, but hey AGU, we're watching what you do and remembering the big game you once talked about supporting your diverse membership.

Only a few days left to apply to join the #Quakehack, the first statistical seismology hackathon for early-career scientists!

Early-career scientists without institutional support are also encouraged to apply, financial support can be made available.

Marked Hawkes processes, usually with a stationary background component and then the magnitude-dependent clustering component on top. And we call them ETAS (apidemic-type aftershock sequence) models :)

Well, we mostly model the clustering of earthquakes in space and time. That means that when there is activity somewhere, the chances of more activity are temporally increased compared to normal. We try to better understand the specific clustering behavior of certain regions and individual sequences.

With so many new people, time for a new intro: I came from pure maths to statistical seismology 5 years ago, and I love it! ๐Ÿคฉ whenever volcano friends need help in the field, you'll find me happily hiking unbelievable landscapes. But usually, I'll be behind my computer, just as excited (almost)

Application

The event is only possible thanks to funding from the Swiss Seismological Service, @seismosocam.bsky.social, and the Fondazione Garbald. And we are thrilled that this is really happening!

Apply here: quakehack.ethz.ch/application....

The goal is to bring together a diverse group and create a space where they can explore innovative ideas for a dedicated period of time without the pressure of producing specific outcomes.

We are looking forward to many applications, not only from statistical seismologists. So please share this!

Alright bluesky, be ready for quakehack.ethz.ch - the first statistical #seismology #hackathon for early-career scientists.

@vaniller.bsky.social, Aron, Marta and I will bring enthusiastic people to a beautiful place where they will form groups, define projects, and work on them for a week.
