"I am not threatened by AI critique. I am threatened by bad critique that hides its real anxieties behind moral posturing...[eg] recycling arguments from the same reactionary playbook that brought us 'evolution is just a theory' and 'vaccines cause autism.'"

Also, have you ever read any Arendt?

Well, good thing you are familiar with the need to dig into a text on your own rather than take a summary at face value. I don't recall her mentioning AGI a single time. That isn't what was relevant or important about her work, at least, to me (related to this dialogue).

Have you heard of the book "The Signals are Talking?"

Can you use all of your research skills to role play the other and write a piece on why it is implausible?

Excellent. Do you believe that you are immune to the type of thinking that might be part of the limited thought that drives the conspiratorial narrative?

Did you actually read the article? πŸ™„

How AGI became the most consequential conspiracy theory of our time The idea that machines will be as smart asβ€”or smarter thanβ€”humans has hijacked an entire industry. But look closely and you’ll see it’s a myth that persists for many of the same reasons conspiracies d...

One of the biggest messages I try to enforce to my students. AGI takeovers are science fiction and distract us from real AI problems, like bias, water consumption and electricity rate spikes. #aiethics #philtech #philai

Last week, had a chance to meet an employee at a top tech company and ask questions about AI tools they were creating. Mentioned, "Why not be proactive?," the employee made it clear. As they develop tools, they design them in wild west mode. They know regulation can't possibly keep up. #aiethics

May I be on this one, too? Great list. There is no good feed for PhilAI right now. I would also recommend @davidgunkel.bsky.social.

This is such a fascinating topic. I've thought a lot about GenAI's lack of a sense of time. It has no consciousness of time and can't -only sequence. Maybe because time can only be experienced by humans?

This year's seniors have had GenAI for their entire academic career. The tools are embedded in their everyday lives, and if we aren't guiding responsible and effective use, they will experiment on their own and shape a future of learning that we don't have a part in. #AIinED #edusky #philai

New in Postdigital Science & Ed: we argue "critical GenAI literacy" isn’t one thingβ€”it’s a constellation shaped by context + power. My section focuses on algorithmic literacy: how AI mediates meaning itself.

Penn State Offered Buyouts. At This Campus, 40 Percent of Staff Raised Their Hands. Faculty and staff members at Pennsylvania State University at New Kensington kicked off the fall semester with a sense of dread.

Buyouts are intended to be a humane way to cut costs. But they can hurt morale and have unintended consequences, as one campus in Pennsylvania is learning after losing 40 percent of its staff. chroni.cl/43rahLs

Famously, GPT-4o makes up cites to papers (though error rates appear far lower for cites generated by grounded & Deep Research models). How often does it do that?

This large-scale study gives us a clear picture. The AI is also biased towards shorter titles & famous papers. arxiv.org/abs/2504.02767
