Close combat in Shivershield isn't 'win' or 'lose'. You can choose to fight defensively, offensively, use abilities granted by weapons and skills, or a mix of them. All through a neat system of token placement.

One of the first ways you'll find out how strategic Shivershield gets is just in deciding how to sequence your activations, and trying to out-think your opponent so that you catch them wrongfooted

It's a sound tactic to force reactions from enemies by throwing rocks or using spells - when someone runs out of stamina they're easy meat!

In Shivershield models can also react to opponents' actions. Usually these are limited, but by going 'on the alert' you get a full pick of actions. You can also be forced to react, so saving stamina can be really important.

Background-wise: The game is set in a very different fantasy world based on original folklore sources from the British Isles & Scandinavia. Natural order id upset by the arrival of the fae & their servants, causing elemental forces to manifest. Warbands must choose which to placate & which to oppose

Rules-wise: No dice rolls or card draws offers great strategy & flexibility. Models stagger activations, but also choose or are forced to react to actions of other models. Mixed objectives means combat isn't always a focus. When it is, a token-laying system gives players choice over how to fight.
