The comments made by Marty Sheargold regarding the Matildas and women in sport more widely were abhorrent, sexist, and deeply offensive. While his departure from the station after public outcry is a welcome move, it also ignores the bigger issue: that his attitudes were allowed to go to air in the first place. The media has a crucial role to play in how women and non-binary people in sport are perceived, and therefore how they are supported. Sadly, Sheargold's comments are not unique; they are the product of a culture that still undervalues and excludes us from traditionally male spaces, systems, and structures. The Matildas, thankfully, have begun to shift that narrative, inspiring generations of not just women and girls, but also boys and men, to see women athletes as role models and normalising their presence in sport.
At Women Onside, we believe in the importance of diversity and representation in sport media. We will continue our work to ensure there are more women and gender-diverse people in sport media, and that our media companies adhere to high standards for responsible and ethical coverage of women in sport. We're excited by the work that organisations such as Women Sport Australia, Deakin University, and Sarah Styles at the Office for Women in Sport Victoria are doing in this space, especially in developing meaningful guidelines that all media organisations can adopt to ensure their coverage of women in sport is what we all expect it to be. We look forward to championing those guidelines when they're available, and using our platform and network to help develop the next generation of storytellers. Consequences for one man do not change a system or a culture. But hopefully this incident sparks a bigger conversation about how, together, we can start to do just that.

Do NOT stop boycotting Israel. A ceasefire isnβt liberation. There is much work to be done.
BREAKING: Heavy Israeli bombardment in Gaza after the announcement of a ceasefire deal has killed at least 32 people, medics reported.
Yesterday world leaders were doing victory laps, as if they somehow managed to stop Netanyahu murdering more innocents. Theyβll say nothing about this.
