On this day in 1933, Frances Perkins was installed as the first female cabinet member in the U.S. government as the Secretary of Labor. She was a powerhouse for workers' rights, driving New Deal policies like social security, securing a federal minimum wage, and overtime pay.

Congrats to Ken Neumann, the new president of SOAR! Ken joined USW as a teenager in Regina, Saskatchewan. He went on to become the president of Local 4728, before rising to D3 Director, and was eventually elected as the National Director of Canada in 2004, 2005, 2009 & 2013.

In 1945, Black cigar factory workers in Charleston struck against low pay and discriminatory job assignments. Their victory won wage increases, back pay, and opened skilled positions that had been denied based on raceβraising standards across the workplace.

On this day in 1906, labor icon Peter McGuire passed away. Known as the father of May Day & Labor Day and founder of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, he helped turn local union activism into a national labor movement.
