As a descendant of a New Zealand whaler I am glad to hear this!

A service advertisement post consisting of a blue background, and two close up images of a 1947 newspaper article. The post highlights my love for newspaper research as part of family history. The article is about the marriage of my paternal grandparents William McGavock and Gloria Dewson, printed in the Hawke's Bay Herald Tribune 17 Oct 1947. The article reads as follows: A pretty wedding was solemnised in the Methodist Church, Hastings, on Saturday, September 27, the bride being Gloria Catherine, only daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Dewson, Warren Street, Hastings, and the bridegroom, William, elder son of Mr and Mrs G. S. McGavock, Massey Street, Hastings. The Rev. G. R. Harris was officiating minister. Charming church decorations were arranged by friends of the bride. A picture gown of dropstitch ninon, styled with heart-shaped neckline, fitting bodice, and fully gathered skirt, was worn by the bride as she entered the church with her father, Small satin bows and frills trimmed the slightly trained skirt, and her lovely embroidered tulle veil was caught with a topknot of real flowers. She carried white hyacinths, cyclamen, and freesias, and pale pink carnations. The matron-of-honour, Mrs June Anyan, and bridesmaid, Miss Anne McGavock, wore petal-pink ninon frocks styled similarly to the bride's. Head-sprays of matching tulle, caught with a topknot of hyacinths and carnations, were worn, and their bouquets were of camellias, hyacinths, and carnations in pink and blue. Messrs Derek Rixon and Ron Dewson were best man and groomsman, respectively. For the reception at the Labour and Trades Hall, Mrs Dewson wore a pink suit with wine accessories! and a spray of pink carnations. A smart frock in gold, with brown accessories and matching shoulder-spray, was worn by the bridegroom's mother. The bride's choice for travelling was a becoming powder-blue frock of moss crepe, worn with wine accessories. The future home of the bride and bridegroom will be in Hastings.

One of my favourite parts of researching your family history is delving deep into the newspaper archives! It really helps to bring the story of your family to life! It helps you to understand who your ancestors were & what made them tick. #genhour #genealogy #familyhistory #nz #archives

@dglaity.bsky.social these are my very dear paternal grandparents William McGavock and Gloria Dewson. They married in 1947! So far most of the nz wedding pics I've shared have been earlier than people thought so we must have been wedding fashion trend setters!

@dglaity.bsky.social good point! All my posts are related to or are from New Zealand. I usually add my little hashtag #nz but forgot this time! In some areas of life we were behind the times so to speak, and in others we forged ahead! You are correct post-war but not by much!

#weddingWednesday has rolled around again! Can you guess what year the wedding of this beautiful couple took place? #familyhistory #genealogy #archives #ancestryhour

@cathyclarke77.bsky.social wow that mugshot album is quite something! Would be amazing to index it one day. Add to the mental 'to do' list!

You know you're in for a good yarn when the person you're researching features this strongly in the #nz Police Gazette! That's what I love about #genealogy and #familyhistory - every single person has a story to tell.

Yes it's had quite an impact on me this week, occupational hazard at times! Thomas followed his older sister to New Zealand, and then another sister followed him. Thomas himself died following a stroke, like his father before him. But at least had a longer life.

#genhour my head was in the workhouse this week after discovering my 2x great-grandfather Thomas was in Stow-on-the-Wold union workhouse 1871 age 7, alongside his father who was listed as an 'imbecile'. More digging reveals he'd had a stroke! He died Dec 1871 leaving Thomas an orphan.

This stunning couple were my 2x great grandparents, William James Mackintosh and Jane Anne Forbes Calder, married in 1905, Southland New Zealand. Jane's parents were Scottish, and William had a Scottish father and Ngāi Tahu Māori mother.

#ancestryhour It's week 3 of running #WeddingWednesday! I share a #vintage wedding photograph, and you all take a punt at which year the wedding was. The person with the winning guess gets a ton of virtual kudos! I adore this weeks photo, hope you enjoy it. #familyhistory #genealogy #archives

That was 1871 census, he wasn't in there 1881 census, and arrived in New Zealand 1884. Sadly his elder sister was still there 1881, listed as 'blind' so may not have been many options for her

Busy day helping out at NZSG working bee, was great to see so many volunteers there! In other news discovered that my 2x great grandfather was in the workhouse age 7, after his mother died. Tough read - probably because I have a 7-year-old myself! #genealogy #nz #familyhistory #archives

Over the weekend I mapped the locations in #Scotland where my ancestors hail from, so that I can go and visit them this year... gosh I'm going to be busy! I've had to promise my family it won't all be cemeteries 😅. It's no wonder I tear up when I hear the bagpipes. #familyhistory #nz #genealogy

It's really useful! Created by Luke Howison who is a web designer and family history enthusiast. He's currently digitizing the NZ intention to marry register too. All voluntarily I should add!

Hmm how to write alt text without giving away too many clues. It's a black and white photograph of a beautiful bride in a full length gown with long sleeves, slightly puffy shoulders and a high neckline. She's wearing a veil and carrying a large bunch of gladioli and dahlias
