As one of the fifteen or twenty genuine Liberal Internationalists in the US, all of whom are active on this site, I do think we really need to confront the fact that a genuine liberal-democratic "rules based" international order cannot be underpinned by arbitrary and hegemonic US military might.

In the meantime, Odyssey would be cleared for a full production run, with an additional 14 vessels planned for procurement. Odyssey would quickly be joined in service by her sister ship Verity, which had been requisitioned as the Flagship of the Romulan Evacuation Fleet.
In the end, the more progressive Odyssey Class won out, vindicating the technology she was built with and paving the way for a new generation of starships to begin development. While Caliburn’s sister ship Caledfwlch would be completed, a third planned vessel would be scrapped.
Testing would begin in early 2381, with a series of exercises centred around Saturn in the Sol system. Both starships would be placed under a variety of simulated and real-world exercises to determine their capabilities and which vessel would be selected for a full production order.

However, the Battle in the Bassen Rift would give the program a new sense of urgency with the reveal of the Romulan Scimitar Class Warbird. With a new headwind, prototypes for both Odyssey and Caliburn would be launched by the end of 2380.

The viability of Odyssey’s “6th generation” technology would also be questioned, with the ship’s pure bio-neural computer core requiring substantial investment and resources. Authorisation for the bio-mimetic gel required to build it would be held up in the Federation Council for years.
The procurement of both starships would come under scrutiny after the end of the Dominion War. With the Federation transitioning to a peacetime economy, many questioned the necessity of fielding such large and provocative vessels. In this political environment, construction on Caliburn would stall.

The Caliburn Class Space Control Ship from San Francisco Skunk Works by contrast represented a more conservative attempt at a super-capital design. Built using technology from the Sovereign Class, the Caliburn was designed to fulfil the role of a dedicated Fleet command starship.

The Odyssey Class Star Cruiser from the Advanced Starship Design Bureau represented a leap forward in technological ability. While the more expensive option, the Odyssey came with several technological innovations, and was flexible enough to act in any role that she could be required to fill in.

As a result, Starfleet would launch the ASC Program in late 2375. After an initial proposal phase, Starfleet would narrow down the three paper designs they were given to two prototype orders; the Odyssey Class Star Cruiser and the Caliburn Class Space Control Ship.

After early encounters with the Jem’Hadar Sekhmet battleship during the Dominion War, Starfleet realised that its mix of cruisers and heavy cruisers could not counter Super-Capital threats. Post-war studies would vindicate this, as Starfleet would only destroy one Sekhmet during the conflict.

The Advanced Super-Capital (ASC) Program was a starship design program undertaken by Starfleet during the latter half of the 2370’s. Created to develop Starfleet’s first Super-Capital starship in over 50 years, the ASC program would face no shortage of controversy before and after its completion.
Sorry to focus on these assholes, this’ll be the last one - but “gay theater kids larping” basically describes most of Star Trek… hell most of sci-fi television before the streaming era.

I mean aside from this I’d love to see some sort of series about Starfleet’s procurement/design groups at any point. It’d be interesting to see what sort of things they have to go through when they’re designing and ordering starships.
