😲An expensive start to your weekend....

Migrated from the old twitter. Cardiologist living in Aotearoa New Zealand with lots of sheep & 236 kākāpō. Science/nature nerd. Bird politics good, human politics suck, but interested. Serious about medicine, other things not so much.

I feel seen.
The funniest things happen when you rent out a house. I have acquired a dog food bowl (hope Fido is not missing it), some lovely ornaments for a bookshelf, and a new looking set of 6 steak knives. I now have so many knives I will remove one set. Would not want folks to think I have a knife fetish.
Next chief executive Andrew Grant says during his business career he witnessed resources being funneled into a variety of institutions, but conservation efforts did not get the same level of investment. The Foundation works alongside iwi and the Department of Conservation.
Two great Kiwis.
Notably private philanthropic pair Neal and Annette Plowman originally invested $100m in the Next Foundation but are now taking that funding further.

The internet can help you figure out just about anything, including how to fix a pesky toilet! Done that myself...🤣
Rakiura kākāpō's youngest chick is a quiet eater but *very* hungry - and mum is happy to oblige. Timestamp 10.09.10

Important breaking news to distract from The Horrors.
In New York, shoppers found a live owl resting peacefully on a shelf next to a cookie jar. Environmental officers gently cradled the sleeping owl to remove it from the store, and then released it into a wooded area. apnews.com/article/owl-...
A close-up portrait of a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk, taken at Ridgefield NWR earlier this week. There is beautiful feather definition, and his yellow cere, downturned beak and eyes seem to show a concerned expression.
I’ve been worried about you and thought I should check in…

Say, you don’t happen to have any mice in there do you?

Let me start a belated thread of Aotearoa New Zealand silvan birds.
To lead things off, a New Zealand Bellbird photographed on Kapiti Island.
31 years ago today, Krusty the Clown first mentioned saying “the quiet part loud,” an expression which has since gone on to widespread usage.
#TheSimpsons episode “A Star is Burns” first aired March 5, 1995.

A mug depicting KC Green's This Is Fine dog comic, but tragically faded
I've had my This Is Fine mug so long that the dog has become a ghost and all that remain are flames
Take a break from The Horrors and enjoy these very vocal little squeakers and their dedicated kākāpō mum. 😍

Yeah, that's a great place for a meal. ☺️
Otago shag
First time we've seen an Otago shag here in the gardens. It let me get right up close for a photoshoot.

All about loon parenting. More importantly a thread of cute loon pictures.
The reason I have a new laptop in the wings? My current laptop has been so well used that the A, S D, E C, N, O and L keys have been completely erased. Just as well I once learnt how to type. 🤣
How you weigh a tiny kākāpō chick (one of two that Rakiura kākāpō is raising). And we get to watch! www.youtube.com/live/BfGL7A2...
Yes the world's gone to hell in a handbasket but there're also people who camp out near kākāpō nests doing nightly checks on tiny little chicks.

Oh my 💓. A helpless little ball of fluff getting a gentle check up. All the best, little one.
Squirrels doing squirrely things together. It must be Spring. 😂
When I was in Boston in the late 90's, I almost got on to a path to a Green Card. But things were changing in a way that would have made it hard for me to get Board Certification. I had the opportunity to come back to Aotearoa and certainly that is where my heart was. Just so f*****g glad I did.
I'm not so sure about that. I think you might really just be the secretary for someone else....😁
Good luck!
In important breaking news that has nothing to do with the general disastrous state of the world, Rakiura kākāpō is gonna be looking after two chicks soon. www.youtube.com/live/BfGL7A2...
