Sudan atrocities are 'hallmarks of genocide', the UN said a few days ago. A UN fact-finding mission determined that evidence of atrocities in 18-month siege in the Sudanese city of el-Fasher points to genocide. The question is – what’s next? How to intervene and prevent more horrors?

We are shocked but not surprised. Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fl) posted on X a few days ago, saying “If they force us to choose, the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one.” Islamophobia, xenophobia, antisemitism, misogyny, and hate from our elected officials must stop. He must resign.
Trump threw out the endangerment ruling. From the NY Times: “Earlier rollbacks of individual climate rules were like removing plates, forks, and glasses one by one. Repealing the endangerment finding is like gathering the tablecloth and carting everything away in one go.” The future looks like Hell.
The Trump administration repealed the bedrock scientific finding that greenhouse gases threaten human life and the environment. This ends the federal government’s legal authority to control pollution that is dangerously heating the planet (NY Times). The Oiligarchy reigns supreme. We are TOAST.

A new online resource! Lexsitus provides free information on international criminal law and the International Criminal Court (ICC). The platform gives access in multiple languages to lectures, case law, and commentary; promotes learning and analysis; and is open to all.
A new survey documents that ¾ of teachers in the European Union have encountered antisemitic incidents in their classrooms. The survey shows alarmingly high levels of physical violence against Jewish students. Antisemitism and Holocaust denial has reached levels not seen since WWII. Never again?

The army of the Soviet Union, our ally during WWII, reached Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland on Jan. 27, 1945. 1.1 million Jews and others had been murdered there. Survivors had been sent on death marches. 7,000 prisoners remained, near death. We honor Holocaust Remembrance Day, Jan. 27.
Trans people are fleeing the United States – to seek asylum in the Netherlands. Asylum-seekers say harassment, loss of legal protections, and threats of violence have made daily life unsafe, so unsafe that going to a refugee camp felt like the only option.
An arsonist torched Beth Israel Synagogue in Mississippi this month. Two Torahs burned. A third did not. Gilbert Metz, Mississippi’s only Holocaust concentration camp survivor, brought that Torah from Europe. Metz and that Torah survived the Nazis and the neo-Nazi who burned Mississippi’s synagogue.
Hearings continue at the UN International Court of Justice into charges that Myanmar committed genocide against Rohingya people. There were allegations that military officials incited violence through hate speech, calling Rohingya “Muslim dogs” who should be made “extinct.” Incitement is a crime.

Breaking news, Iran: More than 3,000 Iranians across 195 cities have been killed amid ongoing pro-democracy protests. The Iranian government has shuttered internet access across the nation amidst ongoing violence, which may be considered as crimes against humanity.
Russian Pres. Putin signed a new law designating April 19 as national “Day of Remembrance for Victims of the Soviet Genocide,” commemorating civilians killed by the Nazis during WWII, without mentioning 3 million Soviet Jews murdered, the largest proportion of all Holocaust victims.
Convicted Bosnian Serb ex-general Radislav Krstic was charged with crimes against humanity for 1002 attacks on the Bosnian village of Novoseoci, shooting 44 men ages 14-77. He’s already serving 35 years for genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia, the slaughter of 9,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys.
South Africa brought a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in December 2023 alleging genocide in Gaza.
Belgium recently became the 10th country to support South Africa. The Trump administration rejects the charges, continues funding Israel.
In this travel and vacation season, some people become “dark tourists.” They seek places where terrible atrocities occurred: Holocaust concentration camps. ‘Killing fields’ in Cambodia. Sites of bombs and atrocities in Syria. Some give homage, respect. Others want gruesome thrills. We must remember.
