The other reason we didn't lose the house is my paternal grandmother owned the farmland she and grandpa worked. It was in her name. She sold off parcels of land as people decided they wanted to live in that area. She gave dad money to pay off the mortgage.

Mom worked at the school part time as a tutor and in the library until she got a better job doing child care. Then she transitioned to part time church secretary. She sewed our clothes, cooked a lot of our food from scratch. She was part of the reason we didn't lose the house when dad was laid off.
