Like every Gulf state that is mostly reliant on oil for its economy would love to use external causes to be able to maximize the price per barrel. All of them are staring down eventual supply depletion and demand has been falling.

The fact that they could face consequences for their actions if and when normal government returns makes them personally invested in keeping the corrupt and lawbreaking administration in power.

The more incompetent the personnel, the more reliant they are on the authoritarian leader for the level of position they attain. Then they start doing things that many or most outsiders consider…bad-to-abhorrent, and it builds further their reliance on the leader’s power for their own power.

OK has been pushing back hard on DHS detention facilities being put in.

Lately I’ve been thinking that the answer to spam and scam is to make the email provider (sender) liable for like 1-5% of any scam that someone can prove was fallen for by a person of diminished capacity. They’ll clean up this mess faster than anyone can believe.

At least part of the answer will probably be “lots of scamming and wasted money”.
