One of my favorite quotes from N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy
“There’s nothing we did to provoke their fear, other than exist. There’s nothing we can do to earn their approval, except stop existing—so we can either die like they want, or laugh at their cowardice and go on with our lives.”
I’m honestly really sick of folks getting stuck at needing to “prove to white ppl” or “make white ppl mad” like stand up!
They know. They’re already mad. So now what?
We saw lots of targeted and poignant messaging to a broader American audience in Dot’s performance but even if that weren’t the case, a decision to attend to our internal conversations, needs, and experiences in a world that wants to ignore, destroy, and/or exploit them is also subversive.
Black art deserves honest, layered, nuanced critique that centers our experience and enjoyment of the art as much or more than the experiences and responses of others.
If/when the art is protest art, it deserves an analysis of impact that begins with us first
Folks are right that the K Dot. discourse exposes a need for critical thinking & art literacy but those skills don’t have to be developed in academic spaces. You can practice critical thinking, engaging with nuance, & adapting your position daily if you make it your intention.
We know b/c we do.
Whenever you get frustrated with your big project just put 15 minutes into your resume!

“I, too” by Langston Hughes
And there was a time when you COULD “step up your vocab” by listening to and dissecting popular hip-hop records. I learned the word “dichotomy” from Will Smith.
I've been watching this and paying attention to a different woman each time 😂
An illustration of a black woman with light blonde, textured hair in a short cut. They have blue eyeshadow, long black eyelashes, full red lips. The background is a deep, textured dark hue, creating contrast with the vibrant figure. She is wearing an earring shaped like an outline of the African continent in bright green with bold text inside that reads: “BLK AF 247 365”
😌😌
I have once again been purified in the waters of Lake Hatertonka.
When I think about the run Chadwick Bosemen went on before he passed, I get sad all over again. That man played Jackie Robison, Thurgood Marshall and Black Panther. We may never get a talent like that again. He so intentional with his roles and left a great legacy in a short period of time.
When social media exposes traditional media’s deceit, it’s time for independent journalists to investigate why the press is backing a president who undermines free press—and is it coordinated?
