Since it resonated with the audience, I’ll recap my main argument against AGI here. ‘General intelligence’ is like phlogiston, or the aether. It’s an outmoded scientific concept that does not refer to anything real. Any explanatory work it did can be done better by a richer scientific frame. 1/3

Have you ever seen a book made entirely of silk? One item getting a lot of reading room attention recently is this "Livre de Prières." This book was manufactured with the Jacquard process, which relied on perforated punch cards to operate a loom, and is considered a precursor to early programming.

I am super thankful for the guidance I got during this journey from my supervisor @satonelli.bsky.social and my colleagues at @dh-fbk.bsky.social, they are just the best 🌸

A brief brief summary of my dissertation: synthetic data for subjective tasks is super tricky and not always worth the cost, even when done for the sake of privacy or representation. Performance metrics do not offer an exhaustive picture and we need manual qualitative evaluation!

A life update I haven't shared online yet: I successfully defended my PhD thesis! Here is photographic proof (it did take me >2 tries to properly get the 🎓 cap on)
