Reform’s billionaire backers want to fill Holyrood with MSPs that will do their bidding.

Hope beats hate!
But as suspected, the vote fell along coalition lines - Labour joined with the Tories & Lib Dems to vote through a budget which sees a 4%, not 5% council tax (despite warnings from the Council's legal officers that this could mean future cuts) and less investment in vital services. Plus ça change...
"I condemn the conservatives for proposing to remove funding for teachers working on environmental, international and outdoor education in schools, our Sustainability champions – this is funding that has supported children and young people to communicate, live, with children and young people in other countries that are being impacted by climate change, that has supported projects like planting hundreds of trees in city parks, and above all empowering children and young people to understand and rise to the challenges of climate change that will be increasingly part of their lives." Cllr Steve Burgess, Education spokesperson
"Reducing emissions from the transport sector requires a significant shift to delivering the city mobility plan. The plan itself is great, but it is not being delivered at the pace required. Our amendment sees significant investment in pedestrian crossings, school travel plans, dropped kerbs, cycle parking and a host of other schemes to support more sustainable travel and cut transport emissions." Cllr Chas Booth, Climate Spokesperson
"Funding a public diner trial would send a powerful message that this city believes that everyone, no matter their income, deserves to go out for a healthy, nourishing meal in the company of friends family and neighbours. And with the far right trying to pull our communities apart, there is no better way to help them come together." Cllr Dan Heap, communities spokesperson
We also had contributions from Steve highlighting the cynical attempts to remove the vital role of sustainability champions in Edinburgh's schools, Dan making the case for public diners and community growing, and Chas on investing in safe walking and wheeling routes across the city.
"We crafted an amendment to the administration budget which would have stopped the slum lords, provided more accessible housing and better supported asylum seekers and refugees. It looks unlikely that any of these will be accepted today. Perhaps for Labour that doesn’t matter, I don’t expect them to be here next term either, but for the rest of us and for the city they have chosen to set us up for failure" Cllr Alex Staniforth, Finance Spokesperson
"I think we need to remember the folks drinking lead water, choosing between heating and eating, juggling childcare and work, kids who are developing asthma and life limiting conditions because of the ignorant obsession with cars over active and safe travel. Think of the people on the housing waiting lists, students with additional support needs. I started being happy to second our budget proposal but now end despondent at the state of this administration and chamber." Cllr Kayleigh Kinross-O'Neill, Co-convener
Budget Day in Edinburgh and it seems - as in past years - Labour will be teaming up with the Tories to get their budget passed😒
It's depressing when other parties put their own interests above those of the city, but Green Cllrs will continue to fight for public money to be spent for public good ✊
