@alexandraverem

I'm a geographer fascinated by nature. Currently, I'm a postdoc at AWI. The focus of my research is the past and present dynamics of ice-rich Yedoma 'mammoth' landscapes.

Why embed a research vessel in Arctic ice?
To study the climate where it is changing most rapidly.
#MOSAiC was the largest Arctic expedition to date.

Fusing Regional and Global Datasets to Develop a Composite Land Cover Product Across High Latitudes Abstract. Rapid warming across the Arctic is the primary driver of widespread permafrost thaw, with far-reaching consequences for local ecosystem resilience, the regional carbon budget, and the global...

If you need land cover datasets for the Arctic-boreal region, here is one great option for you at 1-km resolution: essd.copernicus.org/preprints/es.... It merges several regional products and separates dozens of key land cover types (e.g. bogs, fens, pine forest, spruce forest). 🌎🏞🏔

🌸Plant diversity dynamics over space and time in a warming Arctic 🌸

Our new study @nature.com analysed plant diversity change in >2000 tundra plots over 4 decades. We found that plants changed unevenly, mostly driven by warming and biotic interactions.

Frontiers | The changing face of the Arctic: four decades of greening and implications for tundra ecosystems

I'm happy to share "The changing face of the Arctic: 4 decades of greening and implications for tundra ecosystems". Observations since 2020 provides strong evidence that Arctic have entered a state without historic precedent on timescales approaching a millennium www.frontiersin.org/journals/env...

A new habitat map of the Lena Delta in Arctic Siberia based on field and remote sensing datasets Abstract. The Lena Delta is the largest river delta in the Arctic (about 30 000 km2) and prone to rapid changes due to climate warming, associated cryosphere loss, and ecological shifts. The delta is ...

We used extensive field data and remote sensing to create a new comprehensive #habitat map for the #permafrost dominated Lena Delta, the largest #arctic river delta, located in northeastern Siberia. doi.org/10.5194/essd...

Happy Earth Day! I think in our daily routine, we often don't realize what an incredible world we live in — and today is a great opportunity to remind ourselves of that 😊. The Earth is our Home💚🌍💚

A note about what is going on. No NOAA sites are going dark right now, but NOAA has until July 31st to move the websites in question to a different host platform.

And who knows if there is funding for that or what the options are. We are nowhere near out of the woods.

Rapid Changes in Retrogressive Thaw Slump Dynamics in the Russian High Arctic Based on Very High‐Resolution Remote Sensing We mapped >3,400 Retrogressive Thaw Slump (RTS) objects at six Russian Arctic sites using very high resolution satellite data from 2011 to 2020 Total RTS area changes ranged from −5% to +2,700% w...

Retrogressive thaw slumps form due to rapid thaw of ice-rich #permafrost. While increases in thaw slump numbers & areas have been found in NW Canada before, we now show that also the Russian High Arctic is impacted by accelerating thaw slump formation: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

There Is NO Plan B! 😢

A sleeping Polar Bear on an iceberg off Norway's Svalbard Archipelago.

The ice caps of Svalbard, Norway are melting at an alarming rate due to climate change, says NASA. This melting is exposing methane-rich permafrost and glaciers.
