HoD maths in London. CTeach, NPQLT, NPQSL, MA. Basically I love T&L and research. And KS3 and transition. And maths.

I thought I knew what delegation was but the difference in delegating tasks to delegating concepts/roles is huge and not something that we talk about to overwhelmed HoDs who are told to delegate to fix that.

Not vegan but I love smoky tofu tacos with taco mix beans and oven roasted asparagus.

Also cauliflower steaks are top tier.

Crispy chilli tofu (bosh recipe) is one I do often as well.

One of my team decided she would be responsible for increasing a level uptake (which wasn't even on my radar because of other issues elsewhere) so it's really having an impact.

One big shift this yr is I've been explicitly and actively delegating various roles.

My dept feels stronger than ever and there's been a real culture shift. More is happening and I'm doing less but doing it better.

Who knew HoDs weren't meant to do literally everything?!

An amazing initiative. In Belgium, trainee doctors, offer a 'clinic' where children can bring their 'sick' soft toys for consultations and treatments. Its aim is to demystify hospitals so that they feel less afraid, and to show them the kinds of careers that exist in medicine. Our Y2s loved it.

Oh wow!
I think the silly mistake tally is something I definitely should do. I used to but forgot this year for some reason.

Thank you!
You should be, that is an incredible jump!

That's amazing! May I ask, is there anything you did that you think was super effective to get them there? (Thinking about my yr 11s)

The QLA tracker booklets I made yr 13 are so useful but also funny.

I left a space at the end for "notes for the future" and one of my yr 13s is very angry he didn't read the question properly....

Finished the course (pure at least) with yr 13 today so put up the finale slide and played the final fantasy victory theme for it.

Has anyone done any analysis of topics that are best for students to make sure they get at least a 1 on GCSE maths?

Some days your brain just works.

This morning I've clarified my research question for my lit review and then for my actual thesis.

Now to investigate obsidian as a knowledge management environment.

Fair. I've only worked in my bit of London where there's always been triple so not aware of the bigger picture.
I suppose it's a similar issue to further maths a level.

We could probably find out at least a little as there must be data on triple science which would be similar.

08.03.2026 19:00 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

100% agree. It was murder doing it all - I actually didn't have a 2ic for about 2/4 years I've been HoD due to staffing changes.

08.03.2026 18:59 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

If it's being split into two like lit and lang we'd essentially have to.

It depends on if it's like lit and lang or like combined or separate science.

To be honest I hadn't really considered it not being like lit and lang where we had to get everyone through both.

08.03.2026 18:55 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Absolutely.
That said I have had GCSE resit, normal GCSE, core maths, a level maths and a level economics all under my hat at once. That was my first year as HoD, I think. Things changed after that and I am so glad we just have maths and a level maths now.

08.03.2026 18:52 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I'd go calc and non calc. So the non calc is really numeracy specific and then the calc lets us do interesting things.
That said, as a HoD the idea of dealing with two courses gives me nightmares.

I saw someone the other day post something similar to this
At the end of each question I have put hints as to what the marks on the mark scheme are for.
I have done this for one of the Edexcel Foundation Mock Sets and think my group will find it useful as a scaffold. www.mrchapmanmaths.com/revision

They get one a week in small groups. The videos are just the maths genie ones.

I did experiment with making them myself but asked my students who said it wasn't much better (in a nice way, as I was asking if it was worth me making more)

Rotate in and out between mocks depending on grades.

A blank grid split into 8 rectangles, with the headings:
Factorised, Expanded and Completed Square form
First root, Second root and y-intercept
Turning point and sketch.

Might be a useful slide for anyone teaching quadratic graphs soon.

Have ordered some warm lined trousers so I can cosily enjoy my garden in all weather.
Very much excited to be sitting in my garden enjoying a cuppa and a book next weekend.

Nothing like a day gardening to help you reset after the week.

Essentially yeah. Except without the square root so that when I (today) did the rest it was really easy to build on and we sailed through finding lengths and length of a line segment in 100 minutes.
