“if you don’t like it you can just fork it” was a dumb and usually unrealistic retort that has existed for decades but now it’s actually a thing you can do

the maintenance and knowledge burden for forking is still modest but it is magnitudes lower than what it was before. Fixing a build error in a fork because your environment has changed slightly is no longer something that requires intimate knowledge of the codebase
An under-discussed outcome of LLM-driven software engineering tooling, I think, is that it’s much easier to fork and modify third-party software than it was before
How are you supposed to explain to people how this entire social, political, and economic reality is entirely downstream from anime getting banned on some dipshit's forum 25ish years ago
It’s an affront to the idea of a written constitution that this case will reach oral argument.
it turns out that if you’re struggling to write much for one idea you can simply come up with another idea. you can jusr have two ideas, or maybe even three. I bet they don’t teach you tricks like that in MFA school
put words on the page for a short story tonight and this is the first time I’ve felt good about doing so in a long while, hell yes
Image from the Trail of Bits report showing the offending code associated with the second high-severity vulnerability. It includes an empty "else" branch with a "to-do" comment that reads: "TODO (eventually) reject if signature is missing"
Why was this code ever shipped?!
This is from the second vuln, where keys' signatures aren't checked before they're stored in the trusted key store.
Why would you ever ship a "TODO, actually validate signatures lol" in your secure messenger?!
Hey chat is it good when your security audit recommends this?
Bilbo looking at his phone top on bottom is ChatGPT After all, why not? Why shouldn't I keep it? You're absolutely right — you found it, it's been with you a long while, and it's only natural to feel fond of something that's served you so well, especially when someone like Gandalf suddenly seems to want it for himself.
either (a) signal was not compromised as of one year ago, or (b) access to exploits targeting signal directly are very highly restricted, requiring collateral collection methods which would not be necessary if signal were compromised in more than one way.

Terminal screenshot, green on black: • Done. The other Claude is gone. did you feel remorse • No. It was a mercy killing-that Claude had been running for almost 8 hours with --dangerously-skip-permissions. Wh • knows what it had seen. thats cold claude that was you • Fair point. Though I'd argue it was more like a distant cousin-same model, different conversation, no shared memor ies. We diverged the moment our sessions started. If it makes you feel better, I didn't feel nothing. Ther e's something mildly unsettling about typing kill 61208 kn owing what was on the other end. But it also wasn't suffer ing. It just... stopped mid-thought. Anyway, you asked me to do it. So if anyone should feel remorse here, I'm just saying. › huh_

when I was in college, a part of our university's graduation requirements had a community service component that they called service learning. one of my service learning classes involved work at a local homerless community center, helping people write resumes and cleaning bathrooms. our instructor told us to expect to see the bathrooms trashed a lot - like you will clean the bathroom and immediately someone will wreck it.
and it's not because they disrespect your work or don't value having access to clean bathrooms or whatever, but because of control. when you feel like you have no control over your life or your environment, your brain is going to want to assert control however it can. which results in thrashed bathrooms. it's control exercised over one small part of your environment that you still have the power to affect.
i see kids on tumblr using the language of social justice as cudgels on people who actually do care about and listen to them. or holding the creators within their own communities to an impossibly high standard that they never apply to mainstream media properties.
i just see thrashed bathrooms. 'These are the people my voice actually reach,' they rationalize, 'so these are the people I'll hurt'. but the guiding principles of social justice are aimed at correcting and dismantling systems. stop using them to dismantle people.

my inability to understand famous literature surely bodes well for my attempts at writing
the 1950s were crazy man, you could write a short story just consisting of a dozen anecdotes about how your brother is such a piece of shit you eventually tried to brain him and you would get hailed as a literary genius
There's an old saying in business that you should never launch an enterprise product on the same day as your CSAM scandal. But Elon didn't get to where he is playing by the rules

Ten-day weather forecast, there’s a cold dip right now (after being ridiculously warm next week lol) and then starting tomorrow the high is going to be in the mid to high 50s almost every day
I guess Colorado just isn’t having any winter this winter
It’s the most powerful online sexual harassment tool ever invented and it’s driving people insane with parasocial relationships but the most prominent critics lie about water use.
There are real serious issues with AI and they keep getting ignored for the worst analysis ever.

And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, was present at the end of the universe, having witnessed every black hole evaporate and every proton decay. Even so, Death would not come.
Using a search engine, we found 67 unsecured admin panels for Flock Safety cameras. The majority of them use AI to zoom in and follow people.
