⚠️ The challenge: A halo effect seems to cloud their judgment. People tend to assume that highly competent sources are also well-intentioned—and vice versa. Moreover, sources with high expertise still enjoy persuasive power, even when their expertise is not relevant to the topic.
✅ The encouraging finding: Laypeople do consider both types of factors when judging a source’s credibility and the validity of their claims.
❗New paper alert: What makes sources credible? ❗Across two studies, led by Dr. Lisa Scharrer, we systematically varied four key source characteristics:
🔍 Expertise and pertinence (ability-related factors)
💬 Benevolence and scientific integrity (motivation-related factors)

1/2 New paper alert❗Digital misinformation games are widely used, but which game elements actually support learning? In a study led by Sarit Barzilai, we found that providing misinfo explanations in the game "Misinformation is Contagious" had little effect on learning among teenagers.
