High Seas Fisheries Management Falls Short of Mandates, Analysis Finds The review comes as the United Nations prepares to enforce a new oceans treaty that will require collaboration with these management bodies.

As the new UN Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty approaches in January, it's important to know where RFMOs need to improve & where the new treaty can fill in the gaps so animals on the high seas get the long-term conservation they need!

We examined 16 Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs) over 100 questions covering transparency, catch limits, bycatch, monitoring, protected areas, and more.

When I first showed this figure to colleagues, they were horrified. But I think it adequately shows how confusing the marine CO₂ removal (mCDR) landscape is, and this figure will eventually be the most important contribution of this paper. 🌊
