Here is the image of the back of Ellie's outfit. It's just as gorgeous from the back as the front.
I have to dash out for an appointment. I will pick this up again this evening when I return.

Knit travel suits like this would be very popular in the 1930s & many magazines published patterns on how to knit your own. I think Ellie's striped suit may have been somewhat inspired by the knit ensemble worn by the outlaw Bonnie Parker, which appeared in photos published the year before in 1933.
She wears the outfit with a cute, almost pixie style hat, worn tilted to one side, as was the trend in the 1930s. She completes the ensemble with black stockings & pumps - as revealed in the later (& infamous)"hitchhiking scene".
Ellie is at the bus station, wearing the now iconic "travel suit" of a striped top, belted w/ an ankle length skirt that was the height of 1930s fashion. The top has contrasting white cuffs & Peter Pan collar. Although the film is B&W, colorized images depict the outfit as a rust color & black.
Here is an image of the sweater, after he has removed the jacket. It is likely wool, & thin enough so to not bunch up when worn under the jacket.
The Norfolk jacket is a loose, belted, single-breasted tweed jacket w/ box pleats on the back & front, & a belt or half-belt. It was originally designed as a shooting coat that didn't bind when the elbow was raised to fire. Its origin is unknown, it may have been named for the Duke of Norfolk.
He peels off the trench coat to reveal a Norfolk jacket that is worn over a thin v-neck sweater & buttoned shirt with a tie. The ensemble ignited a 1930s trend of men wearing sweaters under their suits instead of the matching vest in an early form of "business casual".
Due to the runaway success of the film, Gable felt the trench coat was a "good luck" piece for him & he wore it again in several of his movies after.
I LOVE it!
When we first encounter Peter Warne (played to perfection by Clark Gable), he is having a drunken verbal brawl via telephone w/ his editor, much to the delight of his fellow drunken journalists. He is wearing a tan trench coat & the quintessential newsman's battered wool fedora.
Although it is identified by most as a dressing gown, after rewatching the film, I suspect it may be a satin jumpsuit with "beach pajama" style pants, based on the way it moves. But I can't find any info to back up my suspicion & it's hard to tell from photos.
In the first scene, we see American Heiress, Ellie Andrews (played by Claudette Colbert) arguing w/ her father (played by Walter Connolly) over her recent elopement. Ellie is wearing an Asian-inspired dressing gown w/ long voluminous sleeves, in a light color satin (possibly pink).
The film won 5 Oscars, but not for Best Costume Design - which wouldn't be a category until 1949. But the film did have a huge impact on 1930s fashion trends.
Fun fact: Colbert didn't expect to win the Oscar & didn't attend the ceremony. When she did win, she had to be fetched from Union Station.
The costumes for this iconic film were designed by American designer Robert Kalloch. He started in fashion design creating costumes for prima ballerina, Anna Pavlova & later for the Ziegfield Follies. He designed costumes for such films as "Lady for a Day" & "The Awful Truth".
It's #FilmFriday & this week we will look at the costumes worn by Claudette Colbert & Clark Cable in one of my all-time favorite classic films, 1934's "It Happened One Night". The film was made by Columbia Pictures, directed by the legendary Frank Capra & set the standard for the Rom-Com genre.

I actually gasped at some of the photos circulating on here from the most recent red carpet. As someone who entered adulthood in the #90s, I was reminded of βheroin chic.β Except now, replace βheroinβ with βOzempic.β (Iβm guessing thatβs what that is.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroin_...
