'Rewilding' borders to deter invasion isn't such a new concept - Britain did the same in 1940s by flooding much of the east coast to deter Nazi invasion, which famously created the Minsmere reserve and the recolonisation of Avocets etc.

Crazy idea but what if the government itself invested in housing and public transport and put in place regulation that enhances both
A new report from the Economic and Social Research Institute has found that Ireland is significantly behind, and unlikely to meet, the targets set out in the Climate Action Plan for decarbonising residential heat

With gas prices soaring, some people might search for cheaper transportation options. In many cites, a bicycle is a cheap and easy way to get around gas free. Give it a try.
Sent you a dm there. Hope all is well with you, was back in Maynooth doing a blended course before Xmas, memories!
Is John on Bluesky by the way?
Just what you saw there, no more than that Brian.
Astonishing result. Devastating outcome for Labour AND for Reform but an absolute breakthrough for the Greens, proving public hunger for decency, integrity and basic humanity in politics.
Pod of this weekβs Last Word on the environment with Matt Cooper on Today FM now available.
We discussed proposals to buy out homes in flood zones, plummeting Irish frog populations and wacky anti-solar protests in Galway.

I firmly believe there are people who would still be alive today if not for the government delaying the blanket 30km/hr speed limits for urban areas. More will die while we wait for local councils to act #spΓ©irgorm
Whenever flooding hits, we hear in detail all about the wrecked homes, livelihoods, property, and related misery.
But NEVER the major cause: that Ireland has been totally stripped of the native ecosystems like forest & bogs that would naturally have absorbed the water.

I see the effects of this a lot, as a parent and teacher, basically storing up problems for the future.

Bought this book on impulse, has turned out to be a wonderful read. Recommended!
It would help if politicians refrained from opening McDonalds (Alan Kelly take note). We have enough of an obesity problem in Ireland already.
Irelandβs outdoor primary school: βChildren spend less time outdoors than prison inmatesβ
This explains so much.
People with psychopathic traits and low cognitive ability are over-represented in online political activity.
If someone is being cruel, obnoxious and ridiculous, don't try to reason with them. Chances are you won't get anywhere. Just block.

I came across this page earlier and am wondering - are there similar pro active travel groups in Irish Political Parties?

Thanks, itβs a tricky one all right. We did consider a heat pump a few years ago but the cost was pretty steep, we went with solar pv & insulation improvements instead. One of those debates where itβs hard to come decisively down on one side.
The wood I chop myself (basically storm fall, Leylandi in our housing estate) with my electric chainsaw. Burn it in a stove (topped w a stove fan). But it produces black carbon and particulates.
The gas is obv a fossil fuel, but there is no particulates when you burn it, the boiler is efficient and the house is zoned.
From an environmental POV which is the better heating option, using a condensing gas boiler and zoning your home OR burning wood you have sourced and seasoned yourself?
And thanks to this government they get a tax cut too!

@thinkorswim.bsky.social great book, only problem is I canβt read it in bed, canβt sleep after it.
βBikelanesβ must be SAFE for AAA: All Ages & Abilities.
Cities must ban (and enforce it) vehicles that are too big, too heavy, too fast.
Those e-motorcycles endanger people riding bicycles. Many stop riding, others do if necessary & risk lives.
Cities: act! SAFE for all riders.
Those outraged by a β¬100k bike shed should look at the annual cost of renting out car park spaces
