Those strange nights when, for whatever reason, you can't sleep and decide to creep back to your (home) office and attack/review/deal with things that the bustle of daytime just doesn't allow. And you get to see the sunrise as a bonus. I will suffer today mind you...

Something discrete for the weekend...Part II. downslope extension 2D simulation, assembly 5000x1250m, average radius c. 9m, c. 18,000 elements. Top part strong, frictional-cohesive, bottom section weak, frictionless. right end-wall moves downhill , a total of 1.25 km. Total Max. Shear strain

Slope-collapse 2D discrete element simulation, 200x100m, av. element radius c. 0.75m. Bottom strong, frictional-cohesive, bedrock , top weak, frictionless. Equilibration, then slope "cut" and cover "responds". Movie, 2 parts... firstly geometry then total displacement magnitude for each element.

is there any sign that nvidia will ever release their HPC SDK etc. for Windows? As a compiler nvcc really works for me, and I would love its up to date OpenMP, meanwhile VisualStudio still only provides the basics...

It is Friday, code to write and tidy up, documentation to avoid, kids to take to school, contacts to chase, bus strike to avoid, Xmas is approaching, I looked at Rust and I get the point but... the learning curve scares me...

What happens if 2 "basement" faults active at same time but are not widely separated? Here is a 2D discrete element model of just such a scenario. Homogeneous frictional-cohesive cover, 2 faults active together and propagating into/deforming the cover. 2nd movie shows total max. shear strain.

Just a quick(-ish) movie to start the day part II, 2D discrete element model of 2 contractional faults affecting a frictional-cohesive cover, the brown/green layers are frictionless. This movie just shows total max. shear strain mapped to the elements

Just a quick(-ish) movie to start the day, 2D discrete element model of 2 contractional faults affecting a frictional-cohesive cover, the brown/green layers are frictionless. This movie just shows the simple geometric response. Next movie shows the same model but total xax. shear strain

2D discrete element model with 2 extensional faults active together. Faults dip at 30 deg, closely spaced to 1) test code's robustness, and 2) get some, hopefully, interesting faulting in the frictional-cohesive cover (synthetics, antithetics etc). Geometry then total max. shear strain ... "W" ?

What’s for lunch folks? I cobbled together a savoury custard tartlet otherwise known as quiche! I tossed some cherry tomatoes, green & red pepper and a red onion into the airfryer to roast as i prebaked a savoury pastry. I had some grated emmental so added it to pastry and used it for topping. Yum!
