The first known map of Barbados, created before scientific cartography took off. Created by Richard Ligon, it lists the plantations around the coastal parts of the island, while the less-explored interior is an explosion of images and symbolism which highlights what Ligon knew and imagined about this space.
I'm shocked at how little we engage with the extra-geographical features of early modern maps. I mean, LOOK at this one!

Cover design depicts an artist's rendering of a multi-colored blue wave overlaid with a geometric pattern and the words "Canal Dreamers: The Epic Quest to Connect the Atlantic and Pacific in the Age of Revolutions" as well as the author's name "Jessica Lepler."
Want to drift into the currents of the past? The cover for "Canal Dreamers" will pull you in! Love this watery confection by @uncpress.bsky.social. I'm so excited for the book's release later this year. 🗃️🌊🌎📘

Here is the pre-RFK vaccination schedule for your kids. Please download it before he is confirmed and changes/deletes it.
Give it to your pediatrician and say this is the schedule you want your kids on.

A professional headshot of a woman in a navy suit with long black hair.
I’m sad to learn that my law school classmate, Kiah Duggins, died in the DC plane crash last night.
Kiah was an exceptionally talented civil rights lawyer and aspiring legal scholar.
I hope you’ll read about her work and the causes she cared about, some of which I’ll 🧵 below.
What an immense loss

We will likely never be able to establish with certainty the identity of the two Black men painted by Rembrandt. There are no documents found, linking the painting to individuals. But we can make a reasoned guess. #blackamsterdam #17thcentury #Rembrandt #thread

(the reluctance to move here, the 2nd whitest state in the country, is completely warranted for BIPOC & international faculty, though)

There's a real breakdown in trust between the college and locals. IMO, it's warranted on the part of locals! Many job candidates who interview here express reluctance to move to a small town. "What do you mean, there is no uber? I have to have a car?" = a real convo I had with a candidate

This became very apparent to me after a local newspaper published an article about the high hospital fees I had to pay after a miscarriage. Many of the comments were locals who had no sympathy because I was a "rich" college professor. The sentiment was: why should they care?

Opinion | Universities Like Yale Need a Reckoning
We must look in the mirror to know why we have already lost some battles and social respect and part of our democracy
I agree with Blight's sentiment. I teach at an expensive SLAC in a small town in a rural state. Locals assume that profs & students are wealthy and out of touch; many who teach at the college snub their noses at the town www.nytimes.com/2024/11/14/o...

Lots of other counties essentially on lockdown too. I'm in Kennebec (in Waterville), and public schools are closed, in addition to lots of local businesses...it's crazy!
