Klopt. Als vertaler (in mijn geval Engels) merk je dat nog beter. Sommige gevallen van ‘maar’ kun je niet met ‘but’ vertalen, maar juist beter met ‘and’ (bijvoorbeeld). ‘Maar’ geeft soms een gedachtewending aan, en niet altijd een tegenstelling. Een verrassing inderdaad.
